The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Holyoke is a state-funded, fully accredited health care facility that offers veterans quality health care, including full-time residential accommodations, and provides educational and social services for Veterans in the Commonwealth. The Veterans Home at Holyoke is staffed by approximately 330+ administrators, clinicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, skilled trade, dietary staff, housekeeping staff, contractors, consultants and general administrative personnel. The tradition of service to the veterans of Massachusetts is surpassed only by a continued commitment to excellence in care for those who are in need now and in the future. The MVH at Holyoke is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our Maintenance Department for our full-time Motor Truck Driver vacancy. The ideal candidate is enthusiastic and Passionate about building meaningful relationships and can provide outstanding service to our Veteran resident and staff populations. The Motor Truck Driver operates motor trucks, buses, and passenger vans to transport passengers, material and equipment; drives various size trucks, buses, vans and maintenance vehicles and equipment; performs minor maintenance to vehicles; maintains records and prepares reports on such matters as vehicle use and mileage, load an upload materials, equipment and supplies; and perform related duties as required.

Schedule:

This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position working Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30 pm with the flexibility to cover staff absences on other days/shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive)

  • Operate vehicles, including but not limited to buses, maintenance trucks and equipment, passenger vans-to transport passengers and deliver materials and equipment to designated locations
  • Transports residents and staff to and from medical appointments and other transport needs.
  • Assist with the onboarding and offboarding of passengers and visitors using wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
  • Effectively understand and respond to the needs of passengers, particularly those with physical limitations.
  • Transport passengers or visitors to and from MVH related program activities and events, within established schedules.
  • Regulate heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment for resident and staff comfort.
  • Picks up or drop off supplies and act as a courier for the facility.
  • Ensure all required vehicle certifications, inspection documentation, and vehicle designations are affixed to the vehicles.
  • Ensure vehicle mileage and maintenance logs are accurate and current.
  • Maintain and submit all necessary and required vehicle paperwork and reports as required by the facility.
  • Maintains all vehicles and equipment per manufacturer's guidelines and best practices.
  • Report vehicle deficiencies and safety concerns to Maintenance leadership.
  • Maintain cleanliness of state vehicles, including sanitizing, washing (interior, exterior and windows as needed) and waxing. Keeping vehicles clean and free of debris
  • Ensure comfort and safety and comfort of the veterans
  • Document all incidents or accidents in writing using appropriate forms, in accordance with OVM policy or as requested by Maintenance Leadership.
  • Demonstrate driving skills in the operation of vehicles, including but not limited to automobiles, buses, passenger vans, trucks and maintenance equipment.
  • Maintain vehicles in a safe and efficient operating condition by conducting pre and post vehicle checklists.
  • Perform routine vehicle checks including but not limited to tires, gas, oil, directionals, and general conditions.
  • Maintain work area in neat and orderly condition.
  • Assist ground operations in snow removal as much as necessary to ensure the safe continuation of transportation of residents and staff.
  • Assist the scheduler with route or schedule changes and assist with researching possible day trip itineraries, may assist with planning trips or making appropriate reservations.
  • Attend all required DOT driver trainings.
  • Respond effectively to emergency situations.
  • May assist Recreation department staff on outings to serve as the driver for outings.
  • May be utllized as driver for employees attending conferences, trainings and special events.
  • Will drive for parades and other special events as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required at Hire:

  • Knowledge of the state laws, rules and regulations and safety practices governing motor vehicle operations.
  • Knowledge of the types, characteristics and uses of vehicles, buses, and passenger vans.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relatives to vehicles.
  • Driving skills in the operation of vehicles such as automobiles, buses, passenger vans, trucks, etc.
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the english language.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Ability to handle multiple variables in different situations.
  • Ability to carry 50 lbs.
  • Physical stamina and endurance.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent driving record.
  • Basic computer knowledge required

Qualifications Acquired on Job:

  • Become familiar with vehicles and policies here at the Veterans Home.
  • Knowledge of procedures, laws and regulations regarding patient transport, employee conduct and safety.
  • Knowledge of Preventive Maintenance Program.
  • Attends all in services, meetings and education facility as required
  • Basic Life Support for healthcare providers (CPR)
  • Complete Department of Transportation required physical within one month of hire
  • Exhibits a mature and confident demeanor to reassure Veterans.

Special Requirements:

I. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class B CDL Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

II. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C CDL Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

III. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Class 2B Hoisting License issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety.
