Job Description

The Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center is looking for a motivated Mental Health Coordinator I for the Lindemann Inn Shelter. The Lindemann Inn is an emergency homeless shelter for clients of the Department of Mental Health consisting of a 60-bed CoEd Unit and a 20-bed Women's Unit and located inside the Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center. The Lindemann Inn is committed to promoting the independence and self-determination of those we serve as a step toward successful transition to permanent housing.

As Peer Specialist, works with clients and staff to ensure a participatory process for patients as it relates to providing recovery-based treatment. Uses and shares his or her personal, practical experience, knowledge and first-hand insight to benefit the team and persons served. Provides expertise about the recovery process, symptom management and the persistence required by patients to have a satisfying life. Provides outreach and utilizes motivational interviewing to encourage clients to become actively involved in their recovery. Provides assistance and support to clients during the admissions process to DMH shelters located at the Erich Lindemann Mental Health Center. Provides orientation to the building, local services as well as community integration activities in the surrounding area. Works as a member of an interdepartmental team in a multi-service mental health center. Provides individual counseling and facilitates support groups relating to the experience of living with mental illness and the recovery process.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Assists in the orientation and ongoing support of Lindemann Inn community members.
  • Meeting with new clients and assisting in their welcome and orientation to the Lindemann Inns.
  • Provide a tour of the ELMHC and review all of the available supportive programs in the Lindemann community.
  • Promote recovery skills to DMH Shelter clients; assist clients in articulating personal goals and identifying objectives for recovery.
  • Provide advocacy and support to consumers during their stay at the Lindemann Inns. Help clients learn coping mechanisms that will allow them to best manage their lives in our shelter community.
  • Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and in groups.
  • Promote recovery skills to DMH Shelter clients; assist persons served in articulating personal goals and identifying objectives for recovery.
  • Organize Peer Support and Training activities that will empower consumers and help them develop self-sufficiency.
  • Participate on a multidisciplinary transitional team that includes, Lindemann Inn Staff, DMH Case Managers, ACCS workers and Housing Specialists.
  • Provide Peer Advocacy advice to the team as we focus on client's goals, their discharge planning needs and tasks that will help lead them to more permanent housing and services in the community.
  • In collaboration with Outpatient Teams, the Mental Health Coordinator (MHC) will assist clients with the collection of necessary documents for housing referrals.
  • Provides documentation of the client's progress and activities towards achieving goals.
  • As needed, escort of clients to necessary meetings and appointments related to their health and housing goals.
  • Mental Health Coordinator will meet with clients to provide support and assess their needs and safety.
  • Mental Health Coordinator will meetings, trainings, and perform other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification through a certified Peer Specialist program, or currently enrolled in a Peer Specialist program to be certified within 6 mos of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness, substance abuse and/or who have experienced homelessness.
  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Please Note: This is a full-time (40 hours) position, Wednesday and Thursday 1p-9p, Friday-Sunday 11a-7p, days off Monday and Tuesday.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and Peer certification through a recognized Certified Specialist Program.

Based on assignment to a Family Support Specialist position applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved Professional Parent Advisory League (PAL) entry-level training as a Family Support Specialist.

Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
