Job Description
General Statement of Duties:
Under direct supervision of Assistant Superintendent or other employees of higher grade: Responsible for the upkeep and repair operating equipment at the Middleton Facility. Assist the Supervisor of Maintenance in of all infrastructure and ensuring that policy and procedures are implemented. Perform routine and preventive automotive maintenance on all vehicles and maintain log on all work performed; does engine, transmission and electrical work as needed; maintain all department vehicles, (i.e. cars, trucks, vans and tractors); Identifies needed repairs of malfunctioning vehicles, makes appropriate repairs or referrals and handles periodical servicing of all fleet vehicles. Maintains proper key, stock inventory, and tool control. Accounts for and maintains all tools and equipment used in garage and throughout the facility. Responsible for cleanliness, safety, and security of garage area. Assures all vehicles pass annual registry inspection. Responsible for cleaning and refueling of all department vehicles; receives work assignments from Supervisor assigned to the garage; maintain cleanliness and safety of work area; performs other related work as required.

Supervision Received:
Works under direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent or a correctional employee of higher rank who provide instruction and guidance, assign work and review performance through oral and written reports for adherence to policy and conform with rules and regulations.
Supervision Exercised:
Must be able to supervise and direct inmates in work programs and vocational training, crediting them with monthly good time. Directly supervise as many as six (6) inmates on a shift, assuring that they complete their assignments and provide the necessary mechanical/maintenance service to the facility.
Essential Functions:
§ Prepare and maintain records as related to the ordering and condition of tools and equipment.
§ Maintain adequate levels of inventory.
§ Responds in all emergency situations at the facilities.
§ Maintains custodial care and control of inmates. Supervise all inmates assigned to work in garage area and controls access of non-assigned areas.
§ Participate in snow removal operations.
§ Evaluate and maintain standards for cleanliness.
§ Direct janitorial and maintenance/repair personnel of lower rank during the shift, discussing all matters relating to facility operations.
§ Assists in implementing all policy and procedures for the Maintenance Group, bringing forth updates to policy and procedures in writing to the Supervisor of Maintenance.
§ Oversees service and repair functions, maintenance and ensure cleanliness of all areas throughout the facility.
§ Organizes inmate labor, coordinating the use of trustees with Security and Programs, and Inmate Training to maintain the facility in a cost-effective manner.
§ Assist in the evaluation and maintenance of standards for cleanliness of the physical plant, including all buildings on site.
§ Supervises specialist personnel in the installation of new equipment as necessary -- e.g., minor carpentry, wiring, plumbing work, etc.

Qualifications
Required Education and Experience:
§ Three to five years' experience in all areas of general maintenance, repair, and/or mechanics.
§ High school diploma or equivalent with a certificate or diploma from a recognized technical or vocational school.
§ Ability to act calmly, make decisions and act quickly in emergency and dangerous situations.
§ Ability to adapt to varying work situations.
§ Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
§ Ability to motivate others and to understand, explain and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
§ Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Possess reasonable physical stamina and endurance.
§ Ability to maintain accurate records, prepare reports, analyze, and determine the applicability of data, draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
