Position Summary
This position patrols the Massachusetts Turnpike in specially equipped vehicles, providing assistance to disabled motorists, reporting unsafe road conditions and correcting such conditions where possible, and performing other duties as assigned. The Emergency Patrol Service shall not have the authority or responsibilities of a police officer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates highway motorized vehicles containing emergency service equipment to patrol highways, bridges, tunnels and plazas as assigned.
- Provides assistance to disabled motorists by such means as providing fuel and water replenishment, reflating or changing flat tires, pushing disabled vehicles to restart or moving them to a safe location, connecting jumper cables to boost batteries or assisting patrons with locked vehicles.
- Assists the State Police in providing aid and comfort to motorists involved in accidents and in ensuring the safety of other motorists at the scene of an accident by such means as directing traffic, placement and removal of safety cones and flares and removing debris.
- Assists the State Police in providing security surveillance of premises, buildings and equipment. Reports any unusual conditions or circumstances.
- Maintains patrol logs and prepares reports as requested.
- Assists the Maintenance Department by immediately reporting any unsafe road conditions and correcting such conditions where possible.
- Transports materials, supplies, mail and assorted papers to various work locations and administrative office as assigned.
- Renders invoices to motorists for services provided.
- Cleans and washes vehicles and equipment, makes minor repairs as may be requires and reports vehicle and equipment malfunctions or damages.
- Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications
Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older; must possess a high school diploma or GED; must possess a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle license issued at least one (1) year prior to the date of employment. In addition, an applicant must not have had a Chargeable Accident or have been convicted of a major traffic violation (anything more than Endangering) for one (1) year prior to the date of employment.
