About the Massachusetts Clean Water Trust

The Massachusetts Clean Water Trust (the Trust), an agency within the Office of the State Treasurer and Receiver General Office, provides cities, towns and other eligible borrowers throughout Massachusetts with below market rate loans and grants for water infrastructure projects. This is accomplished through the management of two programs - the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). Since its inception the Trust's SRF loan programs have provided nearly $9.1 billion in loans to approximately 300 borrowers to protect and preserve public health and meet environmental standards benefiting the Commonwealth.

Position Summary

We are seeking an energetic, responsible intern to join our team. In this position, you will be focused on learning how our organization runs and can be expected to gain valuable career insight and experience.

Applicants interested in working with the Trust will also work independently on a research project related to water infrastructure and governmental finance. The intern will work with Trust staff to develop the scope of a project, or potentially multiple projects, and final deliverables.

Previous interns have completed internal research that has shaped how the Trust will focus funding on future initiatives, developed language for our website and program materials, and worked on vital analysis for our programs.

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Perform basic quantitative analysis
  • Research components of government programs including applicable regulations and laws
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Software, especially Excel and Word

Required Background Check

The Office of the Treasurer and Receiver General requires a background check on all prospective interns as a condition of participation in the program. Please note the following stipulations regarding an internship at the Trust:

  • CORI: Internship candidates who accept the offer must complete CORI checks. The offer of internship is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal record inquiry within CORI law parameters. Where applicable. Human Resources may request history of the applicant's driving records.
  • Eligibility: Human Resources will then determine whether the applicant has the legal right to work in the United States upon receipt of documentation in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • Family members and relatives: The Treasury does not consider family members for internships

Application

  • We are committed to advancing the experience of students in the workplace. To be considered for an internship with the Trust, you must submit the following:
  • Complete the application form via MassCareers
  • Resume and cover letter
  • Two (2) writing samples.
    • One sample may be a professional or academic paper that demonstrates the applicant's writing or research skills.
    • The second sample should be a personal statement, no more than a single page that describes how the intern would approach an independent research project.

Work Schedule:

The internship program will allow you to work Monday through Friday (except for holidays) for a minimum of 15 hours to a maximum of 37.5 hours a work week from June to August over a 10-week timeframe. You must also be able to travel to the Boston Office location a minimum of 1-2 times a week based on your work schedule

Compensation:

The hourly pay for high school interns will be $18/hour; for undergraduate interns $20/hour; for graduate interns $22/hour.

Please note that the exact schedule will be determined after a discussion with the direct supervisor.
