SHERIFF'S OFFICE OF WORCESTER COUNTY

POSITION DESCRIPTION[1]

POSITION: Maintenance Worker (M/F)

BARGAINING UNIT: NEPBA 515 (SW5)

JOB GRADE: 18

I. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a variety of routine and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work to the buildings and grounds to maintain the proper operations of the facility.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:[2]

(a) To replace light fuses, bulbs, receptacles and switches in cells

(b) To repair broken or jammed cell locks

(c) To check and repair kitchen equipment including dishwasher, mixer, etc.

(d) To maintain laundry equipment in proper working condition

(e) To check motors and controls at all electrically operated gates

(f) To trace and check short circuits in electrical wiring

(g) To maintain boilers and generators in good repair

(g) To perform custodial duties including trash collection, sweeping, waxing and buffing floors, cleaning/sanitizing cells and common areas

(h) To maintain drains in sinks and toilets and main sewers

(i) To perform lawn care and maintain the grounds of the facility including snow removal and sanding during the winter months

(j) To perform painting, repairs to woodwork and replace or repair ceramic tiles

(k) To maintain grounds keeping equipment

(l) To perform laundry service for inmate uniforms and related clothing items

(m) To oversee inmate work crews assigned to perform maintenance tasks

(n) To ensure that tools and materials are accounted for and secure from inmate population

(o) To maintain regular attendance and on time reporting for work

(p) To perform related work, as required.

Qualifications

III. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

A. Education and Experience :

High School graduate or equivalent.

B. Special Requirements :

Must be available for emergency and overtime work, such is required for snow and ice removal and emergency situations.

C. Knowledge, Ability and Skill :

• Skill in using common hand and power tools (drills, table saws, jig saws, sanders, etc.)

• Ability to maneuver in small spaces to make minor repairs

• Ability to climb height extended ladders

• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions

• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods and under varying climate conditions

• General knowledge of minor repair work including basic plumbing and electrical work

D. Physical Qualification s :

• Normal range of motion with emphasis on maneuverability

• Moderate to heavy physical effort demanded when performing functions under a variety of conditions. May be required to lift up to 100 lbs. on a regular basis.

• Specific vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus

IV. JOB ENVIRONMENT :

Work is performed under a variety of conditions including extremes of temperature and weather conditions

V. SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Works under the direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

VI. SUPERVISION EXERCISED :

None.
