Job Description

The Department of Public Health/Tewksbury State Hospital is seeking an experienced Maintenance Equipment Operator.

Tewksbury Hospital serves approximately 360 inpatients whose care is under the auspices of both the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health. Tewksbury Hospital is a Joint Commission accredited long term and acute care hospital that provides comprehensive treatment, care, and comfort to adults with medical and/or mental illnesses. A full range of services are provided including 24/7 nursing, nurse practitioners, medicine, as well as psychiatric and psychological services, a six bed inpatient dialysis unit, clinical laboratory, radiology, respiratory care, nutrition, speech/language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, therapeutic recreation, and pharmacy. This clinical environment is strictly governed by regulatory standards that mandate day to day interventions and services.

In addition to the main hospital site, the hospital campus is home to multiple residential 24/7 programs including programs for adults in recovery and two (2) locked young adolescent programs. These programs serve approximately 300 clients daily.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy-duty equipment such as cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, sweepers, tractors and tractor-drawn mowers and/or sickle bars used in development, construction, maintenance and or repair of roadways and grounds.
  • Perform related duties such as assisting patients, clients and other passengers as necessary as they enter and exit the transport vehicle; ensure that all available passenger safety equipment is appropriately engaged and secure; ensure that all available means and equipment is used to fasten and secure wheelchairs and/or other personal mobility equipment to the transport vehicles itself.
  • Operate motor vehicles such as automobiles, vans, pick-up trucks, panel trucks and other vehicles used in transporting patients, personnel, materials and supplies..
  • Operate lighter-duty equipment and hand tools such as mowers, winches, chain saws, jackhammers, grinders, spreaders, shovels, rakes, weed control devices and other landscape maintenance, snow removal and ice control equipment.
  • Instruct associates in the safe and proper operation and uses of both heavy- and lighter-duty equipment.
  • Perform routine conditioning and maintenance on vehicles, equipment and tools used in the line of duty, including but not limited to lubricating, fueling, interior and exterior cleaning, painting and sharpening, and monitoring tire pressure, batteries, oil, water and coolant levels etc.
  • Perform related duties such as loading and unloading furniture, materials, equipment and supplies; mixing and applying materials such as sand, salt, gravel, asphalt, fertilizer, weed control etc.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports on such matters as vehicle use, mileage, destinations, accidents, incidents, fuel consumption, repairs and supplies.
  • Assist with maintenance, cleaning and upkeep of assigned work areas.
  • Inspect and/or monitor work performed by contractors for compliance with specifications.

Tewksbury Hospital offers a broad range of services including a physician on site at all times, around-the-clock nursing care, rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, psychology services, social services, nutritional services, and an on-site dialysis clinic.

Qualifications

Special Requirements:

I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver's License (CDL).

II. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C Equipment Operator's License issued by the Department of Public Safety.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
