The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is the state agency responsible for overseeing investor-owned electric power, natural gas, and water companies in Massachusetts. It
regulates the safety of bus companies, moving companies, transportation network companies, and oversees the safety of natural gas pipelines and the MBTA.
The Environmental Justice and Public Participation Division is responsible for integrating environmental justice (EJ) principles across DPU's work and empowering, promoting, and supporting public voices at the DPU. The Division's work is taking place in a rapidly evolving energy landscape, with significant technological, regulatory, and market changes, and a growing emphasis on affordability, meaningful engagement, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and equitable distribution of benefits to help the Commonwealth advance its clean energy future. This internship would provide the candidate an opportunity to participate and contribute to ongoing projects to implement the Division's EJ strategy and enhance public participation.
Position
We are excited to offer an internship position in our Environmental Justice and Public Participation Division. This role is ideal for candidates passionate about energy policy, clean energy, and utility regulation. Whether you're familiar with the DPU or new to our work, we welcome your fresh perspectives and enthusiasm.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with creating a glossary of technical and legal terms commonly used in DPU matters and other research projects
- Support the development of best practices and educational resources to implement DPU's EJ strategy and increase public awareness about DPU's work
- Contribute to projects related to the implementation of siting and permitting regulations required by the 2024 Climate Act.
Qualifications

- Interest in energy policy, clean energy, and utility regulation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
