Job Description

These positions will be assigned to facilities throughout the Northern Sector of the Department of Correction to include

Shirley, Framingham, Concord, and Gardner.

Duties:

Supervises and participates in the construction and repair of wooden buildings, cabinets, furniture, floors, windows, and other wood structures by assigning work and participating in skilled carpentry work using such equipment as power saws, joiners, wood lathes and planers and various boring, sanding, and motorized machines to properly maintain the physical plant of an institution. Estimates costs of maintenance jobs within the institution by making sketches, and designees, interpreting blueprints, determining materials required, ordering materials, and supervising the work performed to expedite project completion in a timely manner within budget restrictions. Trains and supervises a number of incarcerated individuals in the maintenance of an institution. Performs other duties as assigned.

SELECTED CANDIDATE WILL HAVE TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS

A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION, DRUG SCREENING,

OSHA RESPIRATOR MEDICAL EVALUATION AND BACKGROUND

AND MUST ATTEND A FOUR (4) WEEK RECRUIT ACADEMY


Preferred Qualifications:

Candidate with current Construction Supervisor's License is preferred.

Comments:

This is a Civil Service position. Candidate must take and pass the next Civil Service Examination for this title and score must be reached in order to be considered for a permanent appointment. Please note that salaries for union positions are determined according to the provisions of the respective collective bargaining agreement. Applicants must have no felony convictions, to include any actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; U.S.C. 509, 510; 42 U.S.C. 15601-15609. The Massachusetts Department of Correction shall not hire anyone who may have direct contact with offenders, who has engaged in sexual abuse in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents. The DOC urges bi-lingual applicants to apply.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in industrial arts work, the major duties of which involved training or instructing, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in industrial arts may be substituted for one year of the required (A) experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
