Job Description

The Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) mission is to administer the Commonwealth's Workers' Compensation System and to provide prompt and fair compensation to victims of occupational injuries and illnesses, and to see that medical treatment to injured workers is provided in a timely manner while balancing the needs of employers to certain workers' compensation insurance costs.

The Investigator I investigates suspected or alleged violations regarding Workers' Compensation laws, prepares reports and evidence concerning investigations, testifies at hearings, informs employees of rights under Workers' Compensation laws, and performs related work, as required.

  • Investigates assigned reported complaints of Workers' Compensation coverage violations to determine if violation has occurred and issues a Stop Work Order if appropriate.
  • Conducts self-initiated checks of employers to determine compliance with workers' compensation laws and takes appropriate action if a violation is determined.
  • Prepares accurate and thorough reports that fully document their actions, observations and interviews. The reports are grammatically correct and completed in a timely manner within the agency's record keeping software.
  • Gathers evidence to support the issuance of a Stop Work Order which can include photographs, video and audio recordings and related documents.
  • Assists the legal staff in case preparation and makes appropriate recommendations concerning their investigations.
  • Testifies at hearings to present information or evidence regarding violations of Workers' Compensation laws by employers or insurers.
  • Informs uninsured employees of their rights under Worker's Compensation laws and refers them to appropriate resources for information and guidance.
  • Makes recommendations for criminal charges to be filed against an employer found to be in violation of workers' compensation laws involving; unusual circumstances, being a repeat offender or suspected of committing fraud.
  • Works with other agencies including local, state and federal agencies.
  • Conducts fixed and moving surveillance as needed or directed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to deal with highly emotional subjects in a professional manner and accomplish tasks successfully.
  • Ability to use computer databases for investigative reasons, following all applicable laws, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact and conduct interviews of subjects with various backgrounds and overcome language barriers while in the field.

This position requires travel throughout MA. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license is required.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in investigatory or law enforcement work.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
