Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is seeking a dynamic HVAC mechanic to join our Facility department's trades worker team. The incumbent would install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment including related equipment. You would also perform preventative maintenance on all equipment and maintain all HVAC and refrigeration equipment in proper operating order along with the other HVAC technicians and contractors. The HVAC II reports to the Foreman and Director of Facilities. Help keep our air systems and environment at the highest standard for our patients and staff.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30AM-4PM

  • Install heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures such as air and water filters and piping used by refrigeration
  • Maintains, repairs, and completes preventative maintenance on various types of HVAC equipment including but not limited to window a/c units, fan cooled chilled water units, split systems, various size steam absorbers, cooling towers, air handlers and pneumatic controls.
  • Maintains, repairs, and completes preventative maintenance on various types of refrigeration units including but not limited to refrigerators, walk-in coolers, ice machines, and chilled water units for drinking water.
  • Maintains, repairs, and completes preventative maintenance on various types of heating systems, exhaust systems, ventilation systems and make-up air handler units.
  • Checks equipment for malfunctions by observing pressure and vacuum gauges and other indicators, by adjusting controls, in testing joints and connections for gas leaks, by using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, amprobes, etc. to ensure proper operation.
  • Maintains, rebuilds, and replaces worn or defective parts, replacing and/or reclaiming specified gases or fluids into systems, by lubricating motors and bearings etc.
  • Calculate heat loads for new installations and treats both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algicides to prevent the spread of airborne bacteria.
  • Performs related work such as pipe fitting, pipe threading, soldering, and brazing of joints, installation of compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls and circulating fans.
  • Other related duties as needed

Special Requirement:

  • Current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the standard preventative maintenance procedures for heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning systems and related electrical systems.
  • Understanding of the methods for lubricating machinery and equipment.
  • Comprehension of the methods of care and maintenance of small hand tools and power tools.
  • Awareness of the safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Keen knowledge of the terminology, coding, symbols, and standard abbreviations used in the installation of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated of the methods and techniques followed in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of pipe threading.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in heating, ventilation, refrigeration, air conditioning and electrical systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of the laws, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, specifications and standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Familiar of state laws, procedures, and guidelines.

About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.
