The Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea, a place dedicated to providing exceptional care to our nation's veterans, is currently seeking a skilled and seasoned HVAC Mechanic I. In this crucial role, you will be the heartbeat of our facility, responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operation of our heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Install and maintain HVAC and refrigeration equipment, including controls and related fixtures like air and water filters and refrigeration piping.
  2. Conduct regular maintenance and repairs on a variety of HVAC systems such as window A/C units, chilled water units, split systems, steam absorbers, cooling towers, air handlers, and pneumatic controls.
  3. Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on various types of refrigeration units including refrigerators, walk-in coolers, ice machines, and chilled water units for drinking water.
  4. Ensure the optimal operation of heating systems, exhaust systems, ventilation systems, and make-up air handler units through regular maintenance and repair.
  5. Monitor equipment for malfunctions using pressure and vacuum gauges, adjust controls, test for gas leaks, and use testing equipment to ensure proper operation.
  6. Rebuild and replace worn or defective parts, lubricate motors and bearings, and reclaim specified gases or fluids into systems.
  7. Calculate heat loads for new installations and treat open and closed water systems by adding algaecides to prevent bacterial growth.
  8. Undertake related work such as pipe fitting, threading, soldering and brazing of joints, and installation of compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating fans.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates should have a comprehensive knowledge of standard preventative maintenance procedures, safety practices for HVAC installation and repair, and an understanding of the methods and techniques of pipe threading. Familiarity with the terminology, coding, symbols, and standard abbreviations used in HVAC systems is crucial, along with the knowledge of the types and uses of equipment and materials used in HVAC systems.

About the Massachusetts Veterans Home at Chelsea:

The Veterans' Home in Chelsea is a Joint Commission accredited inpatient veterans' facility owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is an independent State agency that organizationally reports to the Department of Veterans Services.

The Veterans' Home addresses the needs and provides support to approximately 350 veterans 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Medical, nursing and clinical supports are given to those residents residing in the Long Term Care Facility.

The residential units support veterans who are living independently but receive services and programs ranging from psychosocial and social work, receive transitional assistance, education, work and outreach programs.

The resident population is generally categorized into the following categories: Alzheimer, Long Term Care and Domiciliary

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part- time technical experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and air conditioning systems, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A certificate or diploma from a recognized institution above the high school level, as evidence of completion of a two year program in refrigeration and heating, may be substituted for the required experience.

Education toward such a certificate or diploma will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Special Requirements: Based on assignment, a current and valid Massachusetts Refrigeration Technician's License may be required.
