Position Summary
Incumbents of positions in this series test, repair, install and/or maintain various types of electrical systems and equipment; troubleshoot electrical and related equipment; maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials; inspect the work of outside contractors; and determine materials and/or equipment necessary for a job and on-the-job procedure changes.
The basic purpose of this work is to ensure the safe and adequate functioning of electrical systems and equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Receives specific assignments and obtains materials and special tools from stock as required.
- Uses all standard and special tools required of primary craft and all standard tools required of other crafts as necessary.
- Reads and interprets written instructions, diagrams, and maintenance manuals.
- Inspects and investigates building equipment or structures to identify causes of breakdown or malfunction and repair.
- Plans and organizes work to be performed and verifies that all necessary materials and parts are available.
- Constructs, assembles, repairs and/or adjust building maintenance equipment and/or highway signs.
- Instructs and directs less skilled workers who have been assigned to assist in major projects.
- Reports breakdowns, deterioration, or malfunction of building equipment to foreman or Supervisor as noted during inspections and may recommend remedial action and/or the use of new materials and equipment.
- Performs diversified building maintenance work below the journeyman level when not engaged in work of primary craft.
- Prepares reports on materials, equipment and time spent on various maintenance projects.
- Performs other duties similar in nature and skill level at the above listed duties.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace street lighting.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace electric pumps, fans, motors, and controllers.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace batteries as needed and troubleshoot repair UPS systems.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace generators.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace control wiring.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, install, and repair or replace all electrical equipment associated within the buildings, maintenance facilities, sheds, and other electrical systems.
- Adhere and perform lock out/tag out safety procedures.
- Design and build electrical applications for new and old building locations.
- Work closely with the communication department to run raceways for communication equipment.
- Performs diversified building maintenance work below the journeyman level when not engaged in work of primary craft.
- Instructs and directs less skilled workers who have been assigned to assist in projects.
- Climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, ariel lifts and bucket trucks.
- Documents work performed by utilizing MassDOT assets management system(s), paper forms, etc.
- Other duties as needed.

Qualifications
Minimum Entrance Requirements

Applicants must have at least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician.
Special Requirements:
• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License
• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman License or Master Electrician's License (in addition to a valid Massachusetts Journeyman's License) issued by the State Examiners of Electricians. *
