The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conserving the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. The Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) serves Massachusetts' citizens by protecting, restoring, and enhancing fishery resources and their habitats while providing sustainable fisheries-related recreational and commercial opportunities.

Job Opening:

The Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) seeks applicants for the position of Aquatic Biologist I. The position works with the New Bedford Fishway Crew staff to assist in the design, development, and execution of diadromous fish passage projects in coastal Massachusetts watersheds. The position will undergo a 2-year mentoring period to learn fish passage design and fishway fabrication methods. Mentoring will be provided by the Fishway Crew Foreman and the Diadromous Fish Project Leader. In addition to the primary duties of supporting and enhancing diadromous fish passage, the position will also contribute to ongoing project tasks of designing and maintaining monitoring stations for diadromous fish species, and receive specific assignments related to diadromous fish monitoring and management.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Participate in all seasonal activities of the DMF Fishway Crew stationed in New Bedford.
  2. Deploy construction methods in the field and DMF Fishway Crew shop in New Bedford to design.
  3. Fabricate, and install concrete, aluminum, and wood fishways.
  4. Conduct routine field investigations on the status of diadromous fish passageways in coastal Massachusetts watersheds to identify passage deficiencies and initiate remediation.
  5. Assist the design, development, and execution of diadromous fish projects in coastal Massachusetts. This includes field development, communications with Towns and property owners, fishway designs, permitting, contracting and construction.
  6. Supervision of seasonal employees that assist with monitoring and construction projects.
  7. Participate in diadromous fish monitoring, including fabrication and installation of custom monitoring stations.
  8. Participates in routine in-stream maintenance of migratory channels to remove debris jams, tree falls, and plant overgrowth. At times will lead projects and related coordination with local partners.
  9. Specific assignments will be made to lead diadromous monitoring stations. This includes responsibility for installation, maintenance, and data processing for individual stations.
  10. Participate with river herring monitoring, management, and habitat improvements (spawning, nursery and migratory). Includes river herring stocking and the operation and maintenance of project stocking trucks, pumps, boats, and trailers.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Knowledge and experience in carpentry, and some fabrication experience with either wood, concrete, or aluminum fabrication.
  2. Knowledge and experience with small gas and electric engines, and some experience with either welding, electric fish monitoring station, or water pumps.
  3. Proven ability to work independently with little supervision.
  4. Experience with design and maintenance of field fish monitoring applications.
  5. Ability to speak effectively at public and technical meetings and to prepare clear and concise written technical reports.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively with other staff, contractors, government agencies, and the public.
  7. Knowledge of fisheries ecology, with emphasis on diadromous fishes.
  8. Knowledge of sampling design and techniques, and statistical analysis.
  9. Ability and willingness to conduct routine physical labor in coastal rivers.

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB:
  1. Enhanced ability to develop, design and execute diadromous fish passage improvement projects.
  2. Enhanced understanding and capacity to work with water flow dynamics, and concrete, wood, and aluminum fabrications related to diadromous fish passage.


Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:

I. A Bachelors or higher degree with a major in marine, fisheries, or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management, marine science or oceanography may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.

Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
