Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a caring, dedicated, and attentive Dental Assistant. Under the supervision of the Chief of Dentistry, the Dental Assistant aids in delivery of dental care and chairside responsibilities. The incumbent in this role will assist the dentist with the patient flow and coordination, performing various administrative functions and assisting the dentist in all phases of examination, treatment and related work as required.

Please note: The hours for this position are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., (40 hours per week), The days off are Saturday, and Sunday.

  • Coordinate patient care: scheduling, screening, maintaining dental chart, tracking/coordinating lab cases and consents.
  • Maintain dental clinic communication, and all related logs, certifications and inventory.
  • Coordinate needed repairs with Environmental Services and Facilities Department.
  • Coordinate dental hygiene student's participation.
  • Responsible for overseeing all functions of the Oral Surgery Clinic.
  • Determine/identify patient guardianship when necessary.
  • Assist dentist when other dental assistant is out or when the clinic operations require additional assistance such as room setup/breakdown, direct dental assisting, taking dental x-rays, etc.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work accurately with names, numbers, codes and or symbols.
  • Communicate effectively in oral expression.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Dental Assistant License issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Previous work experience in a hospital or dental office as a preceptorship trained dental assistant.
  • Completion of a certified dental assistant training program/bedside nursing preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Software: Word, Excel and Outlook.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients.

In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.
