$6,000 Sign on Bonus - $1,000 paid at graduation from the Academy, $1,000 at 1 year of employment, $4,000 at 18-months of employment.

Our twelve-week paid Academy prepares entry level Correctional Officers for a career that blends security work, human services and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding on many levels and draws on a wide range of skills. The ideal candidate has strong communication and leadership skills to maintain order and control as well as strong judgment to make good decisions in high stress situations. As a Correctional Officer you will be working as part of a team to ensure inmates receive the tools and resources, they need to be successful when they are released.

All steps of the process below must be progressively completed in order to receive an employment offer:
Written Exam: Applicants must take a written test administered by the BCSO Human Resources team consisting of multiple choice, true/false, short answer question, and essay question. There is no study guide available for this test as it is based on general knowledge information. There are opportunities for retesting should applicants not pass the first time at the discretion of the BCSO.
Physical Fitness Test: applicants who pass the Written Exam must participate in the Physical Fitness Test administered by the BCSO Training Department. Applicants will be assigned a time slot prior to test day. Applicants should review the Physical Fitness Test requirements.
Panel Interview: applicants who pass both the Written and Physical Test will be invited to a panel interview with representatives of the Command staff and Human Resources. This interview consists of random questions and a review of an applicant's employment history.
Facility Tour and Background Check: if selected, applicants will be invited to participate in a tour of the facility in which the upcoming Academy class will be placed. Concurrently, a comprehensive background check will be done inclusive of employment history, detailed CORI and BOP review, driving history, and personal reference check.
Pre-Employment Physical and Drug Test: Applicants must submit to a pre-employment physical and drug screening. The physical and screening are scheduled via an occupational health provider and applicants are required to attend their appointments.
At any point an applicant may be removed from the application process due to failure to complete any of the above steps or substandard background check.
Training Academy
To become a Barnstable County Sheriff's Department Correction Officer all candidates must successfully complete training via our Training Academy at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
The Academy is both mentally and physically challenging. Officer Candidates receive daily classroom instruction and physical training in a paramilitary environment. Those who graduate do so with the confidence and knowledge needed to be a Barnstable County Sheriff's Department Correction Officer.
The Academy is a 12-week paid training academy, Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, subject to change. Officer Candidates are physically trained and academically taught to become successful and knowledgeable career correction officers with the Barnstable County Sheriff's Department. Curriculum includes:
- CPR Training and Certification
- De-escalation Training
- Policy & Procedures Review
- Physical Training
- Defensive Tactics
- Firearms Training
Graduation from the Training Academy is a requirement for employment as a Corrections Officer at the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office.
Qualifications
Must be 21 years of age by completion of the academy (June 2025).
High School Diploma or GED Equivalency.
Must be authorized to work in the US.
Valid, Active & Renewable Driver's License.
Eligible to obtain a license to carry a firearm in Massachusetts.
