Job Description

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic nurse to implement the nursing process and provide specialized acute care for the correctional unit. This role involves assessing, prescribing, delegating, coordinating, providing, and improving acute specialized nursing care. The incumbent will collaborate with the Nurse Manager, healthcare professionals, patients, and their families to oversee and direct clinical aspects of care on designated units, as outlined in the nursing service performance improvement plan and in accordance with hospital and department standards of care and practice.

Hours: Day Shift 7-3:30PM Working Every Other Weekend Day, Days off are Assigned

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):

  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager and healthcare team to oversee patient care from admission to discharge.
  • Organizes and directs nursing care, ensuring proper resource allocation and compliance with policies.
  • Participates in shift reports and rounds to assess patient status, care outcomes, and policy adherence.
  • Communicates patient care information in multidisciplinary meetings to ensure quality care.
  • Assesses and addresses education and training needs of patients and their families.
  • Supervises nursing interventions and reviews documentation for accuracy.
  • Maintains quality management by supervising critical nursing practices and ensuring patient dignity.
  • Mentors staff to advance their clinical, educational, and professional development.
  • Collaborates with Nurse Manager to develop and implement a unit-based Performance Improvement (P.I.) Plan.
  • Directs staff in the P.I. process, assisting with data collection, analysis, and improvement activities.
  • Supervises monthly unit evaluations and prepares quarterly reports on P.I. outcomes and corrective actions.
  • Participates in hiring and collaborates on developing orientation programs tailored to new staff needs.
  • Acts to minimize danger to patients and staff by participating in Risk Management Program and reporting unusual activities/situations to Risk Management Department via Nursing Department.
  • Coordinates nursing process and patient care needs through inter-shift reports and meetings.
  • Maintains professional development and competency through ongoing education and certification.
  • Evaluates staff performance and ensures competency requirements are met.
  • Performs unit-specific competencies and related duties to maintain a stable environment.
  • Provides age-appropriate care to all patients.
  • Provides culturally and spiritually sensitive care.
  • Ensures continuity of care by adhering to handoff communication policies.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and treats everyone with respect and dignity.
  • Identifies and addresses educational needs in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.

  • Utilizes data collection methods for patient assessments.
  • Implements scientific principles in the nursing process.
  • Exhibits empathy towards patients.
  • Conveys information effectively through oral reporting and documentation.
  • Collaborates as a team member.
  • Organizes work assignments and prioritizes patient needs.
  • Sustains physical and mental endurance to withstand stress.
  • Executes emergency medical procedures, such as Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Understands the types and characteristics of drugs used in nursing care.
  • Builds rapport and deals tactfully with diverse individuals.
  • Maintains calm in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Coordinates the efforts of others to achieve work objectives.
  • Decides and acts quickly in emergency situations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understands communication and documentation according to hospital policy.
  • Plans team assignments, evaluates nursing interventions, and develops patient teaching programs.
  • Reports and records patient symptoms accurately to Nurse Manager and physician.
  • Explains laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, and guidelines of governing agency operations and unit objectives.
  • Gathers information through observation, interviews, and examination of records and documents.
  • Interacts positively with individuals from diverse social, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.

About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital's services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.

The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
