The Department of Fish and
Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.MassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals. The Department of Fish and Game seeks applicants for the position of Central District Wildlife Technician (Wildlife Technician II) assigned to the Central District Office, West Boylston, MA, to perform the following duties:
The Central District Wildlife Technician (Wildlife Technician II) assists biologists and scientists by performing a variety of tasks associated with fisheries and wildlife management, data collection, habitat management, wildlife-related public recreation, public access to state-owned conservation lands, equipment operation and maintenance, education, licensing, law enforcement and public relations. This work contributes to the protection and management of the state's diversity of plants and animals, their habitats, and the public's ability to access and enjoy wildlife resources.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists District Manager, Biologists and Technician III in coordination and performance of district activities.
- Assists in maintaining and enhancing habitats (e.g. field and shrubland maintenance, constructing and repairing nesting structures), maintenance of and access to Wildlife Management Areas including parking area and gate maintenance, trash pickup, blocking illegal motorized vehicle access, conducting boundary marking, etc. using a variety of equipment, including hand and power tools, brush cutters, backhoes and bulldozers, to preserve and protect the state's natural resources while promoting a well-rounded and diverse community of plants and animals.
- Assists in various projects, performing activities such as population monitoring, tagging and banding. Assists others in compliance determinations, monitoring, and conservation efforts including conducting surveys and census information. Collects various environmental and biological data, organizes and enters data into database.
- Transports and distributes fish and game (i.e., pheasants, quail, and hatchery raised fish) to provide the public with hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing recreational opportunities.
- Assists in preparation of public information and education and participate in its dissemination. Serve as a resource for the public regarding wildlife issues or questions; educate, inform, and address the public's concerns regarding interpretation of rules and regulations; lead tours of facilities; and coordinate volunteers to help build awareness of conservation and protection and to promote the state's wildlife and natural resources.
- Handles animal complaints by providing technical assistance by telephone or by making site visits and intervening in the best interest of the public and the resource. Provides support for agency efforts to recruit, retain, and reactivate hunters and freshwater anglers, as well as other programs broadening the agency's relevancy to the general public
- Maintains, performs minor repairs, and set-up power equipment and apparatus for collection of samples/data; operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment (e.g., chain saws, motors, pumps, nets, etc.). Perform routine preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; and perform general maintenance activities for buildings and grounds to contribute to the safety, effectiveness, and lifespan of the equipment or facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE
- Incumbents are required to have the following at the time of hire
- Knowledge of basic principles and techniques of fisheries and wildlife biology.
- General working knowledge of all division programs.
- Knowledge of hunting and fishing rules and regulations of the state.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical formulas to analyze data.
- Basic understanding of routine operations of Fisheries and Wildlife Districts and Hatcheries.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment, boats, and motors and use hand and power tools.
- Ability to use a computer to enter data and produce written documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to perform basic math functions.
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB
Knowledge of operations of Fisheries and Wildlife Districts and Hatcheries. Knowledge of Division programs and regulations.
Skill in use of hand and power tools and equipment operation.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents are required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license at a class level specific to assignment and have an acceptable driving record.
Qualifications
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience in work associated with fish or game management, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in fisheries or wildlife technology, fisheries or wildlife management, marine science or fisheries, marine or wildlife biology or a related field may be substituted for the required experience.
