Job Opening:

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for a Bridge Operator I - Dam and Lock Operator I to perform the following duties:

This position is part of the strategic readiness initiative, SRI #69.

General Statement of Duties:

Operates, maintains, and makes minor repairs and adjustments to the mechanical and electrical equipment at the New Charles River Dam and Amelia Earhart Dam. Performs related work as required.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of a Dam and Lock Operator II, the Dam and Lock Operator I operates navigational locks and flood control sluiceways by use of control panels for the purpose of controlling water elevations and passing vessels. Keeps lockgate machinery greased and oiled and free of debris by assisting maintenance personnel. Keeps tide level gauges clean by washing with a brush to keep clean for readings. Checks to ensure that warning and navigation lights and other signaling devices are in operating condition at all times and makes minor mechanical and electrical repairs such as the replacement of light bulbs in order to maintain safe working conditions. Removes snow and ice from lock gates, sluiceways, and pedestrian walkways by shoveling, salting, and sanding to ensure safety and smooth operation of lock equipment and pedestrian areas. Makes regular physical inspection of facility and adjoining areas for cleanliness, proper lighting, and mechanical problems or failures; cleans facility and adjoining areas by sweeping, mopping, washing, and dusting to ensure a clean and safe working environment. Records vessel passage, river levels, tide levels, and drainage data in a log recording such information as type of vessel and direction of passage, river height and tide height, sluice open/closed and pump information for the purpose of maintaining accurate records. Prepares written incident reports on boating incidents and accidents, pedestrian mishaps, and mechanical problems to include oil spills for the purpose of reporting and maintaining a file. The Dam and Lock Operator I is to be awake and alert at all times for signals from boats and vessels desiring passage through locks in order to ensure safe and expedient passage; The Dam and Lock Operator I will monitor and operate a marine radio for the purpose of maintaining contact with vessels which may call for passage or information. Access to reliable transportation to and from DCR sites is needed. Perform other duties as assigned.

This position works regular watches as follows: Sunday and Monday 4:00 pm - 12:00 am (midnight), Thursday 12:00 am (midnight) - 8:00 am, Friday and Saturday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Excellent verbal communication skills.
  2. Excellent written communication skills.
  3. Able to use Microsoft suite (word, excel, etc.).
  4. Valid driver's license.
