Job Description:


Reporting to the Director of Academic Technology Services, and in collaboration with Academic Affairs, the Associate Director of Educational Technology (ADET) provides leadership, guidance and support for educational technology, instructional design, and the implementation, adoption and utilization of the College's Learning Management System (LMS), and educational technology.

The strategic focus of this position is to:

  • Enable student success through the effective and efficient delivery of the curriculum via educational technology, including the LMS.
  • Support the implementation and expansion of virtual, online, blended and remote learning technologies to support the delivery of the curriculum, particularly in support of the expansion of remote learning for Graduate and Certificate Programs, and Professional and Continuing Education curriculum.
  • Facilitate innovation through the strategic application of technology in the teaching and learning environment.

The ADET manages operational oversight for all aspects of the Learning Management System. The position will support the initial implementation and ongoing oversight of a new LMS for the College, as well as support delivery of curriculum, by providing instructional design guidance and LMS training. This role focuses on both students and faculty, emphasizing an interactive teaching and learning experience.

The ADET collaborates with stakeholders and partners across the College-including the Learning and Teaching Center, Professional and Continuing Education, Graduate Programs, the Academic Resource Center, and the Library-to ensure seamless operation of the LMS, support the application instructional design principles in the teaching and learning environment, and to facilitate robust, engaging instructional resources. The ADET leads the design, development, and delivery of inclusive, active, multimodal course platforms, modalities and content, while fostering student success through the meaningful adoption of the LMS and other education technologies. The ADET serves as a subject matter expert on the application of instructional design principles, and the use of education technology in the teaching and learning environment.

This role requires a strong collaborator who is eager to engage with a diverse group of colleagues across the College to ensure alignment of the LMS and related resources with institutional goals and strategic direction.

This is a full-time position with some flexibility for hybrid work. The reporting structure for this position may change as institutional needs, requirements, and strategy evolve.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT: This position is governed by the APA collective bargaining agreement

HOURS: 37.5

SALARY RANGE: $70,000-$80,000 commensurate with experience

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages LMS implementation, operations, maintenance and support. Serves as project manager for College's migration from Moodle to Canvas.
  • Works with faculty and staff to construct the appropriate template(s) (undergraduate, graduate, certificate and online) for course design, facilitating learning objectives into dynamic content.
  • Helps implement minimum standards and best practices for online course components.
  • Provides instructional design guidance and assistance to faculty to develop course materials on eLearning systems and LMS platform. Adapts educational technologies as course modalities evolve.
  • Develops and organizes training materials including user documentation, online tutorials, and provides additional professional development opportunities, to assist faculty and students.
  • Utilizes LMS system data, reporting, and analytics tools to optimize the adoption, and ongoing use of the LMS across the campus.
  • Provides data extracts and analysis as required to meet the institution's compliance obligations, and to facilitate reporting, analytics, and business needs and requirements.
  • Establishes feedback mechanisms for continuous improvement of LMS, and to increase its adoptions and utilization. Provides reports and presents findings as needed.
  • Serves as technical subject matter expert for LMS and educational technology. Advises stakeholders on best practices, and emerging trends in the digital teaching and learning environment.
  • Advises on staff and faculty instructional professional development initiatives and opportunities through consultations, presentations, and workshops.
  • Collaborates with Technology department colleagues, vendors, and related third-parties to ensure high availability, reliability, security and performance of the LMS and educational technology, and to integrate them with the College's enterprise systems.
  • Establishes a welcoming and engaging environment and user experience for students and faculty to enhance the adoption of the LMS and other educational technology.
  • Clear potential or demonstrated ability to work effectively with and benefit a diverse campus population.
  • Establishes communications plans, utilizing existing and emerging communications platforms channels, to raise the MassArt community's awareness about the availability, adoption and use of the LMS and educational technology. Adapts communication strategies and methods to changes in the educational technology sector in higher education, and institutional needs and requirements.
  • Researches and evaluates emerging academic, instructional and education technology and tools, supporting strategic and operational decisions.


Qualifications

Requirements:

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in educational technology, instructional design, or related field.
  • At least three years of instructional design experience.
  • Demonstrated experience training users, developing user documentation and materials, and providing support for an LMS (preferably Canvas) in an academic setting.
  • Strong written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated experience and ability in technical writing, developing and delivering presentations, and explaining technical concepts to audiences with a wide range of technical skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Experience with LMS course design instruction across delivery methods (face-to-face, hybrid, remote).
  • Excellent analytical, planning, problem solving, critical thinking and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities with multiple internal & external
  • Desire and ability to learn and apply new skills and technologies quickly.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's Degree in Information Science, Computer Science, Educational Technology or related field.
  • Deep knowledge of online instructional design including principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting academic, classroom and related instructional technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a teaching or training role.
  • Experience deploying a Learning Management System, and/or migrating content into a newly deployed LMS, preferably Canvas.
  • Knowledge of and interest in leading-edge academic technologies (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, mobile, open content, MOOCs, etc.).
  • Multimedia and interactive learning experience.
  • Familiarity with ADA compliance, accessibility issues and universal design principles.
