ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

EXECUTIVE BUREAU

HOUSING AFFORDABILITY UNIT

(Boston Office)

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell is looking for a talented, highly motivated attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the Housing Affordability Unit (HAU). The Housing Affordability Unit represents the state's fundamental interest in increasing the availability of and access to affordable housing. Access to safe, affordable, and stable housing is essential to health, well-being, and economic opportunity. At the Attorney General's Office, we know that to succeed as a state, we need to expand the stock of available housing, particularly multifamily and subsidized housing; preserve the affordable housing we currently have; and ensure that people are not unlawfully excluded from living in our communities. The Housing Affordability Unit (HAU) was created in 2024 to employ the diverse tools of the Office, including legal advocacy and collaboration with state and local partners, to pursue these urgent goals. HAU is embedded in the Executive Bureau and collaborates regularly with lawyers and staff across the various divisions of the Office.

Primary Duties: The Housing Affordability Unit enforces state housing laws; provides resources and guidance on legal issues relating to zoning and housing production to municipalities, developers, and members of the public; participates in litigation to assert the Commonwealth's interest in certain core legal issues related to fair and affordable housing development and access; and offers housing and land use expertise to areas of the Office already engaged in issues related to housing production, preservation, and access. The AAG will engage in legal advocacy to support the work of the HAU in the areas of zoning, land use, local government law, fair housing, consumer protection, and the implementation of state housing laws. Because the HAU is new and the housing affordability problem is complex, the work of the Unit continues to evolve. The AAG will play an important role in the development of the HAU's strategies and priorities.
