Join our team as a Senior Distribution Planning Engineer and be a part of accelerating the future of energy. In this role, you will play a crucial part in developing and maintaining a world-class distribution system. You will lead distribution system analysis, perform power flow analysis, and identify potential system needs for short-, mid-, and long-term planning.

Additionally, you will analyze complex DER distribution system interconnections and provide engineering reviews for DER interconnection applications.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop scope for Transmission, Distribution, and Storage Improvement Charge programs. Responsibility for testimony to support the program.
  • Provide mentorship to distribution planning team
  • Develop and own the strategy to build out the distribution system using CYME, GIS, and demand forecasting tools. Participate in the development of geo-referenced load forecasts using LoadSEER or similar tools to support probabilistic load modeling efforts at the distribution level.
  • Lead distribution system analysis and perform power flow analysis
  • Conduct system analysis studies to improve efficiency and reliability and quality of service to customers. Studies may include but are not limited to transformer loading, volt-var optimization using capacitors and regulators, short circuit analysis, recloser placement optimization, and load balance evaluation.
  • Prepare project documentation using system analysis results (i.e., need statement, potential solution, one-line diagram, etc.) Use Copperleaf for capital planning.
  • Develop technical support for equipment standards and ensure solutions brought forward meet the needs of Asset Management. Development of planning process for long-term distribution planning; deployment of process standard mechanisms to support business needs as indicated by stakeholders.
  • Analyze and assess complex DER distribution system interconnections. Perform DER hosting capacity analysis, time-series power flow analysis, protection device coordination studies, transient switching analysis, etc. using CYME and PSCAD depending on the sizes and devices of the associated interconnecting DERs.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of DER interconnection portal
  • Validate modeling assumptions and research improved modeling practices
  • Coordinate distribution project development and integration activities.
  • Develop detailed understanding and application of distribution planning tools.
  • Develop training materials for software applications
  • Meet with internal and external customers to develop distribution system plans.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent from an ABET accredited college or university required, preferably with an emphasis in power systems.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license registered in any state of the United States of America or ability to pursue
  • 2+ years of distribution power flow modeling experience using CYME, Synergi, OpenDSS, or similar software
  • 2+ years of DER interconnection analysis experience with understanding of IEEE Std. 1547
  • Proven strong research and self-learning, leadership ability and effective communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong analytical skills, leadership, and communication skills
  • Advanced degrees or training (i.e., Master of Science, Doctorate degree) in Electrical Engineering
  • Proficient presentation skills, diplomacy and facilitation skills covering large and small group forums ranging from technical to non-technical audiences at all levels of corporate hierarchy
  • Track record of leading and managing teams and delivering against tight deadlines in fast-paced and demanding environments.
  • Highly motivated self-starter.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering concepts such as reliability, load flow, stability, short circuit, voltage regulation, transients, power factor, losses, etc.
  • Experience with power system distribution analysis tools such as CYME, Synergi, GIS, LoadSEER, or other similar analysis software.
  • Experience with computer programming languages such as Python, C++, VBA, MATLAB preferred.
  • Experience with active engagements of industry working groups or committees such as IEEE PES Distribution Planning Subcommittee, industry publications and presentations preferred.
  • Experience with power electronics devices and controls preferred
  • Experience with planning/developing a project of a grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) on a distribution circuit preferred
