Job Summary:

The Dayton, Ohio Remote Operating Control Center (ROCC) is currently seeking an Outage and Training Coordinator. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the training of new employees, continuing training of existing CRO's, procedure upkeep, and coordination of all planned outages for all ROCC's. This position will be a hybrid role, but based out of Dayton, OH requiring at least 3 days in the office per week. This individual will report directly to the Dayton Team lead but have dotted lines to the other ROCC Team Leads as well. The secondary responsibilities of this role include working as a CRO as needed to maintain the skillsets of a CRO and/or to fill in for shift coverage.

As a trainer you are responsible for implementation of the training program for new CRO's hires including ensuring completion of all aspects of the training program including: Onboarding, Core Training, Qualification Standard, examinations, etc. The trainer will also ensure all existing CRO's are kept up to date on all required training including NERC training, annual required training, changes to existing procedures and refresher training. The trainer will ensure all procedures, Immediate Actions, ROCC manuals, standards, etc. are maintained up to date. As the Outage Coordinator you will plan, analyze, and coordinate planned outages and switching activities with cross functional teams and external parties for all of the AES Clean Energy assets.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Trainer
    • Assist with training on new sites coming into all ROCC's
    • Create user guide document as needed for tools the ROCC uses such as SCADA, CMMS, logbook, etc.
    • Responsible for ensuring new-hires understand the training requirements and expectation
    • Responsible for ensuring all CRO's are trained in accordance with the AES CE CRO Qualification Program
    • Responsible for facilitating onboarding and core training for all new employees
    • Develop new Task Demonstration Exercises as needed
    • Ensuring Task Demonstration Exercises are up-to-date
    • Provide direct training on procedures as needed to help support understanding and expectation to ROCC staff
    • Provide training on new procedures, immediate actions, standards etc and assist in roll out of these as needed.
    • Act as mentor for CRO's as they navigate through the training program
    • Ensure sufficient progress is being made during the employees OJT and CRO's are on schedule with completion of the training in the qualification card.
    • Perform obsolescence reviews of TDE's, Immediate Actions, Procedures, etc. and determined if/when documents are no longer relevant and need to be retired.
    • Review TOP's and assist to convert into procedures as needed
    • Ensure the new hires are progressing, learning, and understanding the roles and responsibilities of being a ROCC operator:
      • Examining the qual book to ensure progress is being made.
      • Spot checking knowledge
    • Update TDE's as needed for CRO training (example: to incorporate training on any new SCADA systems used in ROCC)
    • Work on shift as CRO a minimum of 2 shift per month to maintain quals as a CRO
    • Work on shift as CRO as needed to cover PTO and sick calls, and any other emergency conditions which warrant CRO coverage.
    • Ensure all CRO's required training is kept up to date, this includes all NERC training, required annual training and any periodic training as required
    • Ensure all CRO's are trained on all new sites
    • Perform refresher training with current CRO's


  • Outage Coordinator
    • Ensure compliance with the Outage Management Process from all appropriate parties
    • Assure outages are submitted on time and in accordance with requirements of the TO
    • Assure proper categorization of outages (Planned, Forced, Maintenance, etc.)
    • Assure good communication and collaboration across cross-functional teams within the organization.
    • Review outage requests and coordinate planning activities with all relevant internal and external parties
    • Develop outage procedures in support of site isolation a preparation for the outage
    • Ensures all Switching Orders are received and reviewed for accuracy.
    • Responsible for putting together outage packages that contain all relevant information, drawings, procedures and other documents necessary to properly plan and prepare for the outage.
    • Conduct job briefs with ROCC team responsible for supporting outages
    • Assure that the outage tracking tool is maintained, up-to-date and used correctly.
    • As needed, provide support to the ROCC in outage execution, mainly site outage request review, outage approval, isolation, site restoration, etc.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of experience working in real time operations in utility scale power production or energy management.
  • Minimum of [two] years of experience working with SCADA systems. This includes wind turbine OEM SCADA systems, solar SCADA systems, substation SCADA systems, and SCADA data aggregation/historian platforms.
  • AES CE CRO I qualified (at least 12 months as qualified)
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to work proactively and productively without direct supervision.
  • Experience with NERC standards, especially those that pertain to a control center COM-001, VAR-002, PER-006, EOP-004, etc.
  • Experience with writing and editing operational procedures.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a highly regulated, procedure driven environment.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse team
  • Demonstrated ability to management skills
  • Proven ability to run meetings effectively with targeted objectives and ensuring goals are accomplished and next steps understood.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior experience providing OJT to new operators is a plus.
  • Qualified as a CRO II is a plus.
  • Obtained an advanced certification from organizations such as PJM or NERC (or any other organization deemed acceptable by Operations Management) is a plus
  • Experience as an operator for self-perform wind sites is a plus.
