Department Overview:

The Head of Business Communications is a senior leader within CAPA responsible for managing a team that drives strategic communications across all lines of business. The role is responsible for overseeing media relations, managing reputational risk, deepening employee engagement, enhancing thought leadership and creating multi-touch communications that extend brand reach and brand equity across a complexity of traditional and new channels with target stakeholders, including media, influencers, current and future employees, investors and consumers. This function requires a broad range of communications, project management and people skills, including the ability to build trusted relationships with colleagues across the organization to execute complex communications plans on time and on budget in alignment with key business goals. The Head of Business Communications must possess a passion for innovation and excellence along with a track record of developing a world-class team that leverages best practices to measurable business results. This role demands outstanding problem-solving, strategic and editorial skills, with an ability to drive transformational change that results in competitive brand differentiation, enhancing TD's reputation with internal and external stakeholders.

Job Description:

  • Provides people management leadership by hiring the best talent, setting goals, developing staff, managing employee performance and compensation decisions, promoting teamwork and handling any/all disciplinary actions, as required
  • Leads a team of communications professionals responsible for developing and executing communications strategies and related deliverables to achieve measurable business results including: Strategic communications plans; media relations; Executive communications and thought leadership; Line of business (LOB) marketing campaigns; internal and external events; employee communications and reputational issue management
  • Responsible for evolving LOB narratives, and building and executing multi-touch communications plans that extend brand reach and build brand equity across a complexity of traditional and new media platforms and channels
  • Leads TD's thought leadership platform, elevating TD leaders by sharing original points of view around trending topics and interests aligned to the Bank via high profile and regional speaking opportunities and digital engagement via LinkedIn and other influencer platforms
  • Creates a differentiated brand identity that resonates with talent targets, aligns with corporate brand, keeps pace with evolving business priorities, and beats the competition
  • Builds an employee influencer network by cultivating relationships with existing and new prospects to elevate the TD brand through rich and relevant commentary and content
  • Oversees world class media relations in collaboration with agencies to maximize positive media impressions across traditional and new media platforms and channels, including top tier outlets, regional and trade publications and digital and social media platforms
  • Manages public relations agency relationship to execute media relations strategies and deliverables
  • Partners closely with the VP of Content and Digital Platforms to support a multi-touch editorial strategy that delivers world-class multi-media content that optimizes reach and engagement with target stakeholders across owned and earned digital and social platforms and channels, including TD's Digital News Center
  • As a member of CAPA's leadership team, builds trusted relationships with colleagues and leaders across the Bank, collaborating effectively to deliver communications plans on time and on budget with business partners across Lines of Business and corporate functions
  • Leads reputational risk and crisis response strategy, influencing key stakeholders
  • Drives effective change management strategies to minimize business disruption
  • Governs budget process and allocation across CAPA
  • Leads and governs integrated planning process and cycle
  • Serves as role model in evolving CAPA relationship managers from service providers to strategic partners of choice throughout the Bank

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, English or related field required. Master's degree preferred
  • 15+ years of progressively senior communications experience, operating within a large publicly traded company and/or unit of a highly-matrixed organization with deep knowledge and experience in financial services, preferably banking, brokerage or retirement
  • 10+ years of employee engagement, media relations, content/editorial strategy and people management experience
  • Excellent strategic and problem-solving skills with a penchant for articulating solutions, alternative approaches and building consensus across all levels of the organization
  • Superior project management skills, an ability to lead cross-functional teams and a proven track record of leading change and collaborating effectively to get things done
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
  • Proven ability to deliver high quality work under intense deadline pressure and juggle multiple priorities
  • Strong presentation and coaching skills; ability to provide value-added communications and issues management coaching and guidance to members of the Senior Executive Team
  • Proven track record of continuously raising the bar to improve performance, challenging the status quo and driving step-change across the team
  • Ability to thrive within a strong, inclusive culture that values hard work, humility, collaboration and concern for the well-being of others as demonstrated by a genuine interest in the career development plans of each colleague
