Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Head of Alternative Assets!

About the role

The Managing Director, Head of Alternative Assets will lead the management of alternative asset portfolios on behalf of SIM's clients, and in particular, its affiliated life insurance clients. The successful candidate will source alternative asset investment opportunities with a particular emphasis on the unique needs and/or constraints of each corresponding client portfolio, and in a way that balances sometimes competing objectives such as risk, long-term return, capital and/or tax efficiency, and other factors. The investable universe is expected to include directly managed strategies (e.g. passive ETFs) as well as externally managed positions, such as private equity, private credit, hedge funds, affordable housing tax credit funds, green energy funds, CLO equity, co-investments, separate accounts, and other potential areas as identified by the incumbent and approved internally. The alternatives team will coordinate due diligence with the internal investment committee and other members of the SIM front office with expertise in relevant areas, as applicable.

This is a management role that will initially have at least one direct report. Close collaboration with key stakeholders at SIM and Symetra Life will also be critical to ensure the timely delivery of investment portfolio positioning, results, and benchmarking that meet portfolio manager and client requirements, the appropriate reflection of such assets in SIM's analytic systems, and the successful and timely handling of portfolio inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Source, evaluate, and implement alternative asset investment opportunities with a focus on risk, long-term return potential, diversification, capital/tax efficiency, and other client-specific considerations. Conduct manager due diligence, coordinating with other areas of SIM as appropriate. Develop/expand relationships with sourcing partners. Present recommendations internally. Collaborate with legal and compliance teams on documentation.
  • Recommend appropriate benchmarks for various alternative asset classes.
  • Conduct ongoing periodic surveillance of investments and external managers. Devise appropriate stress/scenario analyses for holdings. Build repeatable processes for quantifying and reporting results as needed.
  • Keep apprised of emerging industry trends and themes in alternative asset management and perform ad-hoc research projects as needed.

Compensation

Salary Range: $275,000 - $320,000 plus eligibility for annual bonus program and long-term incentive programs

Requirements

Your education, experience and skills

  • B.S. degree in economics, finance, mathematics, or other suitable field with appropriate quantitative skills / background. CFA, MBA or CAIA preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in a front office role in a bank, insurance company, pension fund, or other asset management firm.
  • 12+ years of experience in alternative asset management and portfolio construction, with track record of successfully analyzing and implementing a diverse set of investments.
  • An understanding of the insurance company framework, including the generation of exposure to alternative investments in a capital efficient manner, is helpful.
  • A sound and demonstrable understanding of the fundamentals of various sub-sectors within private equity and hedge funds as well as other traditional and emerging alternative asset spaces; and alternative asset portfolio construction and monitoring.
  • Substantial experience investing in and relationships with a broad range of alternative managers.
  • Prior managerial experience.
  • Specific familiarity with insurance company portfolio management is an advantage.
  • Experience with ESG investing themes and practices is helpful.
  • A "get it done" work ethic that supports the completion of tasks within specified timeframes, and the ability to adjust to shifting priorities as business conditions warrant, understanding that the work requirements of the position will sometimes embed inflexible deadlines.
  • The ability to work cooperatively and collegially within a small team environment and communicate ideas effectively. Interest in being involved in multiple aspects of investment and risk management.
