Under the direction of the Music Program Managerand with guidance from the Classical Guitar Ensemble Instructor, you will assist in implementing the curriculum, ensuring that students experience a structured and dynamic learning environment. You will collaborate with students and their families to promote a positive atmosphere and help nurture the development of our young musicians.
This role requires someone who is eager to learn and apply Success Academy's behavior management strategies while fostering strong interpersonal relationships with students of varying ages, backgrounds, and musical abilities. You will be expected to work effectively with students in grades 3 through 8, cultivating their love for music and helping them grow as both musicians and individuals. We are looking for a confident, motivated, and reliable team player who is committed to excellence and ready to support students through their musical journey.
While a degree in Music Education is not required, you must haveexperience in playing and/or teaching classical guitar, especially with children and youth. You should be comfortable reading standard music notation, demonstrate clear classical guitar techniques, and have the ability to teach these skills to students of varying levels.
Qualifications:
- Education: Associate's Degree or equivalent college experience prior to the first day of work at Success Academy.
- Experience: Proven proficiency in classical guitar and experience teaching classical guitar to children or youth.
- Skills:
- Strong technical proficiency in classical guitar (including scales, arpeggios, right hand and left hand techniques/strokes, and advanced techniques such as harmonics).
- Ability to read and interpret standard music notationfluently, including multiple parts in an ensemble score.
- Familiarity with classical guitar ensemble repertoire, and the ability to arrange music for varying skill levels.
- Ability to break down complex guitar techniques for students at different skill levels.
- Experience in group management and a high level of organizational skills to ensure that all students stay engaged and on-task.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with students, staff, and families.
Key Responsibilities:
- Hours: This is a part-time position with approximately 20 hours per week:
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:30 pm - 6:00 pm
- Wednesday: 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm
- Lead guitar ensemble(s), either in full or in part, for a diverse group of 30+ students in grades 3-8, focusing on classical guitar techniques and ensemble playing.
- Provide one-on-one instruction as assigned by the Music Program Manager and/or Ensemble Lead Instructor.
- Assist in arranging and composing musictailored to the needs of the students and as directed by the Music Program Manager.
- Manage classroom behavior and maintain a high-expectations environment to ensure that students remain engaged and focused during learning activities.
- Monitor and support students' social-emotional development, guiding them through problem-solving and cooperative learning activities during group sessions.
- Ensure student safety and well-being while providing meaningful and engaging instruction.
Additional Expectations:
- Ability to commute to and work at Ditmas Park, Prospect Heights and Flatbush, Brooklynlocations.
- Work collaboratively with other program staff to ensure the success of each scholar.
- Uphold the Success Academy standards for behavior and performance, ensuring a high level of discipline and positive student engagement.
