Become a Meteorology Senior Specialist at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you'll support the Weather Services Group within Business Resiliency. You will work on blue sky operational support for the Situational Awareness Center and incident operational support when Emergency Operating Center is activated for gray and black sky conditions and including PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoff) activations. A strong focus of duties will be on forecasting for fire weather conditions. Additionally, our Meteorology team is responsible for operational forecasting support for the procurement of energy within the Energy Procurement and Management organization. Responsibilities
- Maintains proficiency in the use of all existing weather-related technical tools, exploring and implementing new technical solutions across SCE
- Helps develop new tools, models and applications that improve forecasting accuracy, preparation, fidelity and production efficiency
- Collaborates with vendors on improving their weather forecasting services
- Continuously improves in-house weather forecasting skills and statistical weather forecasting models
- Organizes, analyzes, and maintains historical meteorological data to support long-term trend analysis and the refinement of predictive models
- Develops accurate and timely weather forecasts to inform decision-making on risks and grid reliability planning
- Provides meteorological insight and forecasting to support weather mitigation plans and creates forecast recommendations to support weather hedging activities
- Identifies and alerts management of meteorological events capable of increasing risks
- A material job duty of all positions within the Company is ensuring the protection of all its physical, financial and cybersecurity assets, and properly accessing and managing private customer data, proprietary information, confidential medical records, and other types of highly sensitive information and data with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience in weather forecasting and analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences or a related technical discipline.
- Demonstrated Electric/Gas Utility work experience.
- Demonstrated fire weather forecasting experience Skills, education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience integrating various weather outlooks and briefing users on uncertainties and impacts.
- Demonstrated experience forecasting one to seven-day ahead surface temperature and forecasting weather utilizing a wide variety of observational and model data, both at surface and upper air.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing renewable power production (wind, solar, hydro) and how weather impacts those resources.
- Extensive knowledge of NWS system and demonstrated experience using National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) products.
- Ability and experience with configuring and running WRF model.
- Demonstrated weather forecasting experience for California and the Western United States.
- Demonstrated experience forecasting for conditions pertaining to or around wildfires.
- Demonstrated experience with long-term (month ahead or more) weather forecasting.
- Demonstrated experience using Python, R, or other coding languages for data analysis, statistical analysis, and forecasting.
- Familiarity with implementing and maintaining operational products preferred.
Additional Information
- This position's work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.\u202f Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California.\u202f Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.
