THE ROLE 

As an experienced Jewellery expert and valuer, you will function as a strong business getter working alongside senior management in Switzerland on sourcing and selling property with a focus on private collectors and the trade to ensure we meet our European revenue targets.

RESPONSIBILITIES

JEWELLERY SPECIALIST

  • Responsible for proactively sourcing and generating business opportunities in Switzerland for global Jewellery auctions and private sales.
  • Leveraging and growing strong client relationships, with a focus on private clients, collections, institutions and the trade community.
  • Generating private sales in line with plan revenue targets.
  • Drive bidding participation in the International Jewellery sales from your client contacts.
  • Value property to provide auction, fixed price, fair market, insurance estimates as required
  • Prepare proposals and carrying out valuations, working closely with the Valuations department, the Head of Magnificent Jewels, Head of Fine Jewels EMEA and Head of Business EMEA, ensuring they are entered into the Valuations system.
  • Arrange and attend sweeps to source property, in coordination with the local offices, specialists, Liaisons and consultants.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Magnificent Jewels, Head of Fine Jewels EMEA, Head of Business EMEA, and client development to develop private client leads and strategy with the goal of consignment generation for auction and private sale
  • Attend relevant events, exhibitions, etc. to develop your profile both internally and externally
  • Act as an ambassador for the Jewellery business internally and externally for Sotheby’s, promoting its services, products and expertise to internal stakeholders, cross selling the Sotheby’s Jewellery business to all Sotheby’s clients
  • Operating at all times in accordance with the Company’s rules on compliance and corporate governance.
  • Oversee the day-to-day client enquiries by email, telephone etc.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCIES

  • 5+ years of professional experience as an expert in Jewellery and the Global Jewellery market. Experience in auction preferred.
  • Gemmological qualification (GIA or an equivalent) with expertise in pricing and authenticating high value jewel stones and gems.
  • Able to value jewellery at various price points for sale at auction and insurance.
  • Familiar with antique and modern jewellery, along with relevant hallmarks, makers’ marks and signatures.
  • Previous experience presenting or lecturing on jewellery advantageous
  • Capable of identifying and overcoming obstacles to growth and success and translating expertise into results.
  • Commit to uphold ethical standards at the highest level, consistent with Sotheby’s reputation.
  • Strong ability to network and convert social connections into business opportunities.
  • High levels of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and with a flexible approach to a wide range of tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – both spoken and written.
  • Professional, discreet and committed to an exemplary level of client service.
  • Good level of numeracy and computer literacy.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel and SAP preferred
  • Fluent in French and English
