Position Overview

As part of the Siemens cloud operations organization, this position makes significant contributions towards the delivery DevOps solutions that support best-in-class cloud-based applications. As a Backstage.io Developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining our internal developer portal using Backstage, an open platform for building developer portals. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in software development, infrastructure automation, and CI/CD pipelines.

In this role, the successful person will create and maintain Internal Developer Portal that that helps developers build, test, and deploy applications more efficiently. Streamline the software development process by automating routine tasks and providing a unified interface for developers to work across different platforms. Meet security compliance and best practice standards and are well documented. Participate in, and sometimes lead, proof of concept and first of a kind activities to validate product concepts.

Responsible for surpassing customer expectations to achieve high quality, innovative solutions that are delivered on-time. Has diversified knowledge of methods and practices in broad areas of infrastructure development and operations. Recognized by peers as a strong collaborator. Must excel in a team environment that changes with new technology adoption and evolving customer requirements. Works with some supervision on the most complex projects and desires to obtain complete latitude for independent judgment. Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and customize Internal Developer Portal to serve as a developer portal for internal teams.
  • Integrating different R&D tools and services in Internal Developer Portal for seamless developer onboarding experience
  • Implementation of plugins and APIs to extend Internal Developer Portal functionality base on R&D needs
  • Collaborate with development and infrastructure teams to gather requirements and design the platform accordingly
  • Maintain and upgrade Backstage.io and its plugins as per evolving development needs
  • Work on container orchestration, infrastructure as code (IaC), and CI/CD pipelines for deploying and managing Backstage instances
  • Monitor the performance of Backstage.io, identify potential issues, and ensure high availability of the platform
  • Document workflows and best practices to help internal teams leverage Backstage.io effectively
  • Using Infrastructure As Code (IAC) best practices, create automated infrastructure within the cloud and on-premise platform, including package management, application load and configuration, and systems monitoring and administration.
  • Deliver improvements to source code management, deployment, operations, maintenance, cost control, security, monitoring, and audit tools and processes.
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD tools and processes to support development, QA, and customer value realization teams.
  • Manage a service critical codebase with version control using Git including Gitlab, or Github
  • Contribute to Operations strategy planning, design, implementation, and maintenance activities.
  • Be part of maintaining a 24x7, global, highly available SaaS environment according to internal and external service levels agreements.
  • Ensure the production environment is operating in accordance with established procedures and best practices.
  • Provide escalated support for high severity and critical network events

Education, and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering or equivalent
  • 5-10+ years of related experience
  • 5 years of Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) experience
  • 5 years of experience delivering enterprise grade cloud and SaaS application

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Backstage.io Developer or similar role
  • Strong Proficiency in TypeScript, Node.js, React.js and GO
  • Hands-on experience with React and frontend development
  • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, Docker, or other container orchestration platform
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure
  • Proficient in API development, including RESTful and GraphQL
  • Deep understanding of microservices architecture and integration with developer tools
  • Experienced in creating and managing Backstage plugins
  • Knowledgeable in YAML configurations and infrastructure automation

• Familiar with Git Actions, CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices

  • Expertise in automation/configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Jenkins, ArgoCD, etc.
  • Experience in securing CI/CD pipelines, including secret management, registry scanning, and runtime security
  • Ability to adopt and extend continuous integration and testing processes, GitLab-CI experience preferred
  • Contributions to open-source projects, especially Backstage.io
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments
  • Ability to manage goals, track milestones and report on status
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

  • Strong base for software architecture and design including inter-process communications, asynchronous processing, micro-services, message queueing, interfaces, and API development
  • Understanding of Cloud APIs and Cloud technologies specifically AWS & Azure
  • Strong understanding of Internet security considerations in web and application development
  • Cloud monitoring tools (Datadog, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, Graphana, Kibana)
  • CICD pipelines tools (Artifactory, SonarQube, Vault, Aqua, Container registry)
  • Experience with full-stack development of web interface applications
  • Prior experience in managing and scaling internal developer portals.
  • Familiarity with Service Catalogs and TechDocs within Backstage.
  • Experience integrating monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, etc.
  • Knowledge of security best practices for Backstage and associated tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • Experience with design, develop, and configuration of information security tools.
  • Experience with security compliance

Siemens Software. Transform the Everyday

The salary range for this position is $126,100.00 to $227,000.00 and this role is eligible to earn incentive compensation. The actual compensation offered is based on the successful candidate's work location as well as additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education/training.
