Senior System Drives Application Designer

The Senior Systems Design Engineer will work on Low Voltage and Medium Voltage Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Systems. This position is responsible for providing application, design, and engineering support to the North American sales team by determining the best fit for Schneider Electric products through a knowledge base in the design, development, and installation of electronic motor control, automation, and machine control/safety systems.

T his position will report to the North America Drive Applications Center Manager as part of Global Industrial Automation Business Unit.

The candidate should have in-depth knowledge of how to most effectively apply variable frequency control products for industrial applications as well as an understanding of various competitive control schemes and communication protocols.

Location : Raleigh, NC, USA preferred

What will you do?
  • Coordinate with the local sales marketing, and project management to l ead the definition of large/complex technical solutions during tendering phases
  • Address alternative preliminary solutions in accordance with customer requests with proper design, industrial, quality, and cost.
  • Establish and manage detailed product definition file (Firmware script, Electrical drawing, technical specification) on a pre-defined technical specification
  • Lead all technical aspects of complex solutions (architecture, systems, ...) during execution phases: Design, Integration, Testing, FAT, Installation, Commissioning
  • Define FAT-Field application test plans, define and implement technical corrective actions
  • Contribute to meet the project objectives in scope, schedule and cost
  • Assist the Project Manager in elaborating alternative solutions during change order management
  • Apply suitable tools/method (E-plan, Visual C++, Java etc) to guarantee and optimize design quality
  • Provides technical support to field personnel and field sales engineers some level of system start-up and troubleshooting assistance
  • Assist global R&D and local marketing teams for continuous product evolution


Who will you report to? T his position will report to the North America Drive Applications Center Manager as part of Global Industrial Automation Business Unit.

What qualifications will make you successful for this role?
  • Bachelor of Science degree or above in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • 10 + years of successful and pertinent experience with variable frequency drives or industrial controls
  • Practical knowledge and experience in the application of PLC's, HMI, control products, motor control outside of VFD's and other industrial automation products
  • Familiarity with basic electrical standards including NEC, UL-508A, and UL 61800-5-1, UL347A
  • Experience with Computer Aided Drafting software (AutoCad, Eplan, SEE XP, ProEngineer)
  • Ability to design and document drive assemblies given basic conceptual information, including customer documents (basic outline information and electrical schematics)
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to positively interact with marketing and manufacturing personnel
  • Excellent problem resolution skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel internationally for 2-week initial onboarding
  • Technical sales experience a plus
