Power Electronics Design and Development Engineer (F/M)

Schneider Electric has an opportunity for a Senior Power Electronics Design and Development Engineer position in our Grenoble, France location.

You will join Schneider Electric, and its Power Systems and Services division, which supports key missions relating to design and development and current/future technological needs of Medium Voltage products.

Reporting to Ilknur, you will join a growing team of 15 specialized engineers in the field of power electronics.

Your role :

The purpose of this role is to contribute to development and validation of the "smart converter" technologies that Schneider Electric can provide to its target customers. The role will be working on the development of Direct-Connected-Modular-Medium-Voltage-Converter, submodule (power stack) design and innovative power electronics technology solutions for high power applications (1 MW+).

Your missions :
  • Design, development, and validation of power electronic converter modules (converter submodules) for medium-voltage applications
  • Specification of key power electronic components and datasheet analysis of parts considering lead time, availability, price, second sourcing and qualification.
  • Contributing to loss analysis and thermal modelling for converter submodules, and definition of requirements for the converter cooling systems.
  • Design and maintenance of back-to-back test rigs for validating power converter technology under realistic operating conditions.
  • Preparing the test specifications for back-to-back test rigs.
  • Laboratory testing of power converter submodules, e.g., switching tests, heat runs, etc.
  • Supporting the converter control algorithm development team (models based on MATLAB/Simulink) with innovative solutions.
  • Supporting the development team with HiL test specifications.
  • Writing design reports and maintenance of technical databases/repositories.


Your profile :
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (MSc or PhD in Electrical Engineering would be preferred)
  • 8+ years' experience of power converter design, test, manufacturing, and field issues


Your skills :
  • Fluent in English
  • Simulation experience of power converters and sub systems, including detailed knowledge of simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of medium voltage design and control issues
  • Experience of architectural option analysis, trade-off and selection including power topology.
  • Ability to present results in a clear and concise manner, including technical report writing
  • Additionnaly, the following skills would be appreciated :
    • Experience of working with high power converters (1 MW+).
    • Good knowledge of Multilevel Converters.
    • A wide range of power electronics experience including hardware design (inverter modules and converter systems), control design and converter simulation.
    • Strong knowledge of power electronic components (IGBTs, MOSFETs, diodes, capacitors, laminated busbars, inductive components, gate drives, etc.).
    • Thermal design experience (loss calculations, simulations, and cooling unit specifications).
    • Experience in power electronics control and protection coordination studies.
    • Experience of the safety requirements of working with high voltage and high-power electronics.
    • Ability to perform FMECA analysis
