A Compliance Engineer is responsible for ensuring that lithium-ion battery products within a company adhere to all relevant safety and regulatory standards, including design, testing, and documentation, by collaborating with engineering teams to design compliant batteries, manage testing processes with third-party labs, and maintain necessary certifications to market the products globally.
Key Responsibilities:
Design Review and Approval:
• Collaborate with battery design engineers to review battery cell, pack designs and BMS for compliance with safety standards.
• Identify potential safety hazards in battery designs and propose mitigation strategies.

• Conduct safety analysis techniques such as FMEA, FTA, and HARA
• Ensure design documentation accurately reflects compliance considerations.
Testing and Certification:
• Manage testing processes with third-party laboratories to validate battery performance and safety against relevant standards.
• Interpret test results and address any non-compliance issues.
• Coordinate with certification bodies to obtain necessary safety certifications for battery products.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Maintain comprehensive compliance documentation, including test reports, design files, and certificates of compliance.
• Prepare reports for internal stakeholders and regulatory agencies detailing compliance status.
Collaboration and Communication:
• Work closely with cross-functional teams including hardware, software, system engineers, and design teams to integrate safety considerations into the battery system.
• Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure compliance with relevant safety standards.
• Provide technical expertise on functional safety to internal and external teams.
Regulatory Compliance:
• Stay updated on all applicable international and domestic regulations related to Li-ion batteries, including UN DOT, IEC, UL, and local standards.
• Analyse new regulations and assess their impact on product design and testing requirements.
• Lithium-Ion batteries labelling requirement.
• Develop compliance strategies to ensure products meet all regulatory requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical or a related field. A master's degree is a plus.
• Proven Min. 7-8 years of experience in compliance engineering, preferably in the energy storage industry with a focus on functional (electrical) and fire safety of Lithium-ion batteries.
• Strong understanding of regulatory standards, including UL, IEC, IEEE, and other relevant industry guidelines like
1. UL1741, IEEE 1547, UL1998/991 and UL60730-1.
2. UL9540, UL9540A, UL1973, IEC 62109-1/-2
3. FCC, CE, NOM, ISED, NEC, NFPA, and other product regulations
• Familiarity with energy storage technologies such as lithium-ion batteries, Sodium-ion batteries, and other advanced energy storage systems including cell chemistry, BMS design, and potential hazards.
• Ability to interpret standard and challenge agencies.
• Work closely with engineering teams, quality assurance, manufacturing, and sales to ensure compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
• Experience in compliance testing, validation, and certification processes.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
