This is a very exciting project available to a placement student which will give you the chance to join and work in a vibrant environment assessing novel vaccines and therapeutic antibodies against infectious diseases. This project will involve the use of various in vitro technologies including bacterial culture, cell culture, cloning, protein expression and purification, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), Western blot, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and cell-based assays. This position would suit students with an interest in molecular biology, immunology and biochemistry.

Main responsibilities:

The Infectious Diseases & Vaccine (IDV) team is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and collaborates with leading academic groups worldwide on a wide variety of infectious disease projects including malaria, RSV, influenza, COVID-19 and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.This project will focus on monoclonal antibody characterisation and will involve the use of various in vitro technologies including bacterial culture, cell culture, cloning, protein expression and purification, ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), Western blot, surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and cell-based assays. This position would suit students with an interest in molecular biology, immunology and biochemistry.
  • Support the IDV team on different infectious disease projects.
  • Carry out experiments to characterisation monoclonal antibodies.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all experiments.
  • Present experimental results in team meetings.

About you:
  • Education: You should be studying for a degree, preferably in Life Sciences or in a discipline that is relevant to the programmes on offer.
  • Skills: Strong written and oral communication skills, good organisation with attention to details to manage a number of priorities.
