Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a dedicated Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Professional to join our dynamic team. In this critical role, you will be instrumental in identifying potential hazards, analyzing data, and implementing effective control strategies to mitigate risks associated with environmental, safety, and health issues. This is a matrixed position in materials science R&D operations, such as pulsed power (accelerator) sciences, regulated lasers, and chemistry operations. You will collaborate with a team of highly trained ES&H professionals and line management to ensure comprehensive work hazard evaluations and controls. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for:

  • Identify and Analyze Risks: Proactively identify problems, collect and analyze data, and develop innovative control strategies to mitigate or control risks associated with ES&H issues.
  • Collaborate Across Disciplines: Work closely with other ES&H professionals and line management to ensure thorough work hazard evaluations and effective control measures.
  • Support Mission Activities: Contribute to mission success through self-assessments, causal analyses, and performance metrics that enhance safety and compliance.
  • Direct ES&H Support: Provide hands-on ES&H support and actively contribute to Center and Division ES&H initiatives that promote a culture of safety.
  • Customer-Focused Partnership: Maintain a strong customer focus, partnering with line management and staff to address ES&H needs through a shared learning and risk-based approach.
  • Perform ES&H Functions: Execute a variety of environmental, safety, and occupational health-related functions to ensure compliance and best practices.
  • Implement Policies and Processes: Develop, implement, and communicate organization-specific ES&H policies, processes, hazard controls, and tools to enhance safety performance.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$95,400 - $185,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Safety Engineering or a related field, along with (5) years of relevant experience.
  • The ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Certification as a Safety Professional (CSP) or Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or active pursuit of such credentials.
  • Experience applying safety principles and overseeing materials science R&D operations
  • Familiarity with DOE, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Knowledge of occurrence reporting and management processes.
  • Experience with accident or event investigation, including root cause analysis.
  • Active DOE security clearance is a plus.

About Our Team:

Department 00633 provides Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) operational support. The ES&H coordinators in this department support staff and management in Mission and Executive Support Divisions. Department personnel support and facilitate implementation of ES&H requirements and processes and assist in the identification and analysis of hazards and risks which may create an unsafe worksite. Department personnel collaborate with ES&H and subject matter experts to formulate engineering and administrative controls to mitigate hazards. In addition, the department supports assurance activities through self-assessments, causal analyses, and metrics.

About the Matrix Organization:

This position will be matrixed to the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Facility. CINT is a Department of Energy, Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center. CINT operates as a national user facility devoted to studying the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials and structures.

Through our Core Facility in Albuquerque and Gateway Facility in Los Alamos, CINT provides access to scientific expertise and advanced capabilities for researchers to synthesize, fabricate, characterize, understand, and scale nanostructured materials into the microscopic and macroscopic worlds.

This comprehensive approach provides the greatest potential for nanostructured materials to inspire technological innovation with enduring beneficial impact in national S&T research priorities including quantum materials and quantum information science, advanced microelectronics, clean energy, pandemic preparedness, sustainable manufacturing and artificial intelligence/machine learning.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
