What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you a hardworking leader, with a background in a security field, looking for your next great opportunity? If so, we have a Senior Manager, Safeguards & Security (S&S) Protective Force leadership position available!

In this role, you will lead a diverse group of talented and motivated Safeguards and Security professionals in support of duties important to national security. You will participate in the corporate development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people. You will ensure the highest standard of professionalism is employed in executing the security program requirements, budgets and schedules. You will also successfully integrate these activities with those of other major organizational segments. This position regularly interacts with executives both internal and external to Sandia National Laboratories. Interactions frequently involve special skills and abilities, such as delivering results, negotiating with customers, collaborating with other national laboratories, and enforcing regulatory requirements that impact national security.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide leadership and direction to managers and members of the workforce within the group.
  • Lead and coordinate activities and make decisions concerning employee recruitment, selection, and training, assessing employee performance, defining work assignments, addressing salary requirements, and providing employee recognition and disciplinary actions.
  • Ensure that customer needs are satisfied safely and securely, through managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements.
  • Balance the acquisition and development of manager and staff resources, capabilities, and existing knowledge with current and future projects or programs.
  • Provide active leadership over the operational management of a unionized 24/7/365, high-risk, Protective Force to include planning, directing, and organizing security-related programs.
  • Provide leadership to direct investigations related to accidents or other unusual incidents and institutes procedures and practices to prevent a recurrence.
  • Implement the policies, procedures, and systems required for maintaining and enhancing overall Sandia National Laboratories' security.
  • Plan and coordinate a diverse range of activities, new initiatives, and products within and across the group.
  • Collaborate and partner with peers to develop safeguards and security strategic plans and coordinates division-level resources for safeguards and security functions, including funding, equipment, and other resources.
  • Partner with peers within the S&S Center Leadership Team (CLT) on S&S objectives and initiatives.
  • Participate on multi-lab teams and work groups to improve alignment and communications.
  • Effectively lead and manage a group of up to 150 people.

    Due to the nature of the work, this candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$175,100 - $297,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in a discipline relevant to Safeguards and Security functions (such as Criminology, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Engineering, Physical Sciences, etc.), plus ten (10) years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Five (5) or more years of demonstrated leadership/managerial experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's degree and five or more years' experience working with a DOE/Federal Agency program oversight personnel.
  • Experience in Security functional areas such as International Travel, Personnel Security, Physical Security, Classification, or Information Protection.
  • Leadership experience implementing DOE Orders and requirements.
  • Demonstrated understanding of management assurance or quality systems.
  • Interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to effectively negotiate and develop trust-based working relationships with multiple internal and external customers and partners.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage tasks and programs within a high ambiguity environment and to establish a continuous process improvement/learning environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate employees, manage personnel issues, and resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated adherence to Sandia's Corporate Values and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Broad understanding of Sandia's national security mission work.
  • Take responsibility and accountability to appropriately manage activities that are assigned to owners outside of your direct organization.
  • Knowledge of problem solving and resolution techniques.
  • Experience with data review that focuses on developing plans to show continuous improvement.
  • Active DOE/DOD security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain DOE SCI clearance.

The Safeguards & Security (S&S) Program's purpose is to render exceptional service in the national interest. Our mission is to protect people, information, facilities, and material to accomplish the national security mission. S&S solves security challenges by listening to customer needs and then developing and implementing solutions. The S&S program continues to monitor and manage risks that could adversely affect the security of our operations and safety of our workforce. Those risks include:

  • an insider threat that may maliciously release critical and/or classified information;
  • an active assailant;
  • international travel/global threats;
  • Incidents of Security Concern (IOSCs).

    We strive to develop strategic partnerships and provide effective tools and resources to integrate security into every aspect of the work performed at Sandia. S&S continues to innovate and transform security to modernize the program for operational excellence; develop and sustain highly capable security professionals and strengthen relationships and collaborate to achieve our national security mission. S&S is responsible for leading efforts to develop, implement, and successfully execute a diverse portfolio of Defense Nuclear Security (DNS) Safeguards and Security Programs to mitigate risks and liabilities and facilitate execution of Sandia's national security mission. The DNS S&S Program also leads and supports DOE, NNSA, and the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) initiatives.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
