What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an outstanding physicist/engineer to join our team supporting world-leading research in semiconductor quantum systems. This position will play a critical role in the development and operation of software tools, interfacing with hardware, that control and characterize semiconductor-based spin qubits. The candidate will develop and utilize knowledge of hardware control, software development, microwave electronics, and experimental techniques to advance the state of the art in qubit control.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Propose, design, and develop advanced concepts for qubit control and gate operations, developing and deploying solutions across the software/hardware interface for experimental quantum systems.
- Collaborate with team members to design and implement software to control quantum devices using experimental hardware such as arbitrary waveform generators, oscilloscopes, or FPGAs.
- Work in a diverse, collaborative team environment on large-scale projects as part of a fast-paced technically challenging research organization.
- Develop and apply your independent vision, creativity, and ability to pursue and achieve R&D milestones.
- Communicate results to sponsors, collaborators, team members, and others in various venues.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$95,400 - $185,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor's degree in Quantum Information Science, Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant STEM field plus four (4) years of relevant experience; or
- Master's degree in the fields above.
- Demonstrated software development experience in languages and environments such as Python (numpy, scipy), C, MATLAB, or similar.
- Experience interfacing with experimental control hardware (e.g., FPGAs, oscilloscopes, etc).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance and an SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph examination.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience developing technical solutions across the software/hardware boundary, developing software that controls experimental hardware in quantum information science relevant environments
- Experience managing data across the full experimental lifecycle, from acquisition, through analysis, to disposition.
- Ability to work in a diverse, collaborative team environment
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to develop, deliver, and present technical ideas and results
- Ability to quickly learn and apply new experimental techniques
About Our Team:
The Advanced Silicon Quantum Devices Department (05226) is part of the Microsystems Engineering, Science & Applications (MESA) Center at Sandia National Laboratories. We provide science-based solutions to meet the needs of various offices within the Department of Energy (especially the Office of Basic Energy Sciences, various Energy Technology Offices, and the National Nuclear Security Administration) as well as other government agencies. Our work spans the spectrum from fundamental research to state-of-the-art applications. We conduct a broad range of research that includes theory and experiment relating to quantum-based computation and fundamental science. Research topics in this department include various aspects of design, development, characterization and operation of semiconductor spin qubits, the physics of semiconductor quantum dots and quantum information applications. The Advanced Silicon Quantum Devices Department at Sandia has a long history of performing cutting-edge basic research on the transmission and manipulation of quantum-based information.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by the DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
