What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a proactive and team-oriented Safeguards and Security (S&S) Planning and Operations Specialist to serve in the role of program lead for the Background Review Office (BRO), which encompasses the Validations, Pre-Employment Background Review, DOE and SNL Reporting Requirements of Security Interest, and Human Reliability Program (HRP) areas.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Perform the work of the above mentioned four programs and help oversee the work of non-exempt staff and student interns
- Train and mentor new team members and ensure effective and efficient teaming
- Collaborate with Safeguards and Security (S&S) subject matter experts and other organizations internal to Sandia
- Collaborate and benchmark with external organizations to identify and implement process and system improvements and/or efficiencies
- Communicate with all levels of staff and management regarding sensitive topics and issues
- Provide guidance about compliance with security laws, codes, regulations, and standards regarding the BRO programs
- Develop, review, and report metrics to management to monitor the health and success of the program
- Act as the Sandia Delegated Representative (SDR) for BRO subcontracts
- Act as the HRP Administrator to ensure compliance of the HRP with 10 CFR 712, HRP
- Act as the subject matter expert on Pre-Employment Background Reviews and Validations to ensure compliance with 48 CFR 904.4
- Plan, facilitate, and coordinate strategic planning activities for the BRO
- Support management with implementation plans, conduct strategic level program reviews, and track and report results against strategic goals and achievements
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$62,400 - $120,400
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Sociology, Criminology, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Security, or a related field plus 5 years of experience; or equivalent (AS + 9 years or no degree + 13 years)
- Experience working within DOE Security orders and requirements
- Experience with leading programs, teams, or strategic initiatives
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Master's Degree in a relevant field
- Experience working within Sandia's or another NNSA site's Safeguards & Security program
- Experience working within DOE/NNSA Validation, Pre-Employment Background Review, Reporting Requirements, and/or HRPs
About Our Team:
Personnel Security includes the Badge Office, Clearance Office, Uncleared Personal Identify Verification Program, Human Reliability Program, and Background Review Office. We ensure positive access control for DOE resources through the issuance of DOE badges, the processing of security clearances and visits, as well as administration of the Human Reliability Program. Additionally, we conduct background investigations on potential employees of Sandia and visitors requiring site access.

Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information:
This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
