What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Quality Engineer to join our Transportation Systems Analysis Group, where we specialize in researching, designing, developing, testing, and building cutting-edge secure transportation solutions. Our quality services support various areas, including corporate and technical program and project management systems. As a Quality Engineer in this group, you will implement systematic approaches to enhance, maintain, and develop quality systems and processes.

On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Perform comprehensive life cycle assessments of high-consequence transportation products and operations in dynamic environments, focusing on quality assurance, compliance with safety and environmental standards, and identifying potential risks to optimize safety protocols.
  • Analyze and validate the safety basis for Transportation Security System Program (TSSP) products and fleet operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and best practices while validating quality metrics throughout the process.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders and customers to develop and deliver tailored training programs that enhance operational readiness and understanding of quality assurance practices and safety protocols related to TSSP operations.
  • Develop and propose innovative technology solutions aimed at addressing the evolving needs of TSSP, ensuring alignment with industry standards and best practices for enhanced safety and efficiency.
  • Serve the nation by implementing a system-of-systems approach to the safe and secure transportation of high-value assets, leveraging Sandia's expertise in systems research and design to evaluate and mitigate risks across normal, abnormal, and hostile environments.
  • Implement and monitor quality control systems and processes to ensure the integrity and reliability of TSSP products, utilizing statistical methods and metrics to identify and rectify quality issues.

    Opportunities for growth to enhance the QE skillset across various standards (e.g., NQA-1).

Salary Range:

$85,100 - $164,100

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant STEM field or equivalent education and experience.
  • Associate degree in a relevant field plus 4 years of relevant experience.
  • No degree plus 8 years' of relevant experience.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
  • Developing and enhancing quality systems and processes.
  • Interpreting technical drawings, product specifications, and requirements in relation to design and product characteristics throughout the life cycle.
  • Conducting quality inspections, observations, and reviews for technical projects

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in technical writing.
  • Knowledge of OST Quality requirements and their implementation at Sandia through the TSSP or MGT Quality Programs.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teams and leadership, engaging with all levels of internal and external partners to foster productive working relationships and achieve consensus.
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional teams, facilitating and driving integrated, multidisciplinary solutions to complex operational challenges.

About Our Team:

The Transportation Surety and Design Department supports the NNSA Office of Secure Transportation (OST) by conducting safety and security evaluations of OST operations, designing transportation systems and, when warranted, identifying and demonstrating technology applications to enhance OST safety and/or security posture. The Protective Force Component Testing and Development Team is also a vital part of the department. This team evaluates, develops, and improves a wide variety of technologies for enhancing protective force effectiveness for the DOE, DoD, and several other customers and applications.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
