NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range:
$149,700 - $254,400
Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Thermal, Fluid, and Aerosciences group is searching for a visionary department manager who can strengthen its technical leadership in the core competencies of experimental aerosciences while advancing a strategy for the future. The Experimental Aerosciences Department resides in the Thermal, Fluid, and Aero Sciences Group (1510) within the Engineering Sciences Center (1500). This department supports a wide variety of work that directly impacts several mission areas, including but not limited to, nuclear deterrence, aerospace systems, hypersonics, strategic partnership projects, Weapons Science and Technology, and security applications. This work also spans the research, development, and application spectrum, with significant contributions to discovery science, testing for ND programs, and everything in between. The job requires deepening and expanding partnerships with product organizations as well as collaborating with other experimental and computational organizations to advance capabilities and processes for qualification and product development with vastly reduced uncertainty and variability. The department engages in activity level work, and ensuring this work is carried out safely and effectively is a key responsibility for the L1 manager. The manager of this department will also need to partner very closely with the Computational Aerosciences department to effectively deliver integrated computational and experimental capabilities. Achieving a balanced portfolio of department work across the research-development-applications spectrum is needed to ensure the department stays at the forefront of rapidly evolving capabilities. The manager's ability to attract, retain, and develop a pipeline of exceptional staff expertise to sustain the department's leadership role in experimental aerosciences technology is critical to success.
Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Developing and maintaining strong partnerships with other managers within the Group, Center, and broader Laboratories to further work across the research, development and application spectrum.
- Developing a strategy and implementation plan for the department to ensure long term-health and impact, to include technical investments, and customer and workforce development.
- Work with staff on technical and career development goals, identifying and providing growth opportunities.
- Negotiate work-scope, manage budgets, and provide assurance of department deliverables.
- Foster a culture that promotes safety and security, as well as a diverse and inclusive work environment.
- Strengthen internal and external partnerships to enrich relationships, leverage strengths, and amplify our mission impact.
- Deliver on lab goals of accelerating innovation and leading in modern engineering by advancing cutting-edge capabilities that provide a differentiating advantage in supporting the core missions of the Laboratories.
- Have responsibility for the Thermal, Fluid, and Aerosciences Laboratories which includes two high-speed wind tunnels, a large vacuum chamber for high-altitude simulation, two shock tubes, and supporting mechanical and electrical systems.
- Participate in setting technical direction for the Delivery Environments program, and Infrastructure and Operations programs.
- Partner with the Advanced Simulation and Computing program by interacting with various system and component organizations and taking on programmatic responsibilities.
- Traveling occasionally to support ongoing and new business efforts.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Qualifications We Require:
- Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline
- Plus, 8 or more years of directly related experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of the job
- Technical experience in aerosciences or closely related disciplines
- Experience with program development including interface with customers and partners (industry, government, university, etc.)
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline
- 5 or more years of leadership experience as demonstrated by serving as a project manager, principal investigator, or prior management experience
- Experience with performing or managing activity level work
- Experience with the Nuclear Weapons program at Sandia
- Technical depth in aerosciences disciplines (aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, compressible flows, flight mechanics) or closely related engineering disciplines
- Experience in performing research and leading research
- Evidence of building successful partnerships across disparate organizations
- Broad knowledge of Sandia's Missions and capabilities
- Commitment to staff career development at all levels of experience and training
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Passion for achieving workforce diversity and an inclusive environment for all members of the workforce

The Experimental Aerosciences Department of Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico offers challenging and important work relating to national security in R&D and technology applications in aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics, compressible fluid mechanics, and flight dynamics.
