What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an individual to manage the Protective Force Department at Sandia National Labs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Demonstrate operational experience with active engagement in leading & managing a structured (e.g., DOE Protective Force, Paramilitary, Military, or LEA) entity:
  • DOE/NNSA Protective Force Operational experience
  • Work with a unionized workforce:
  • CBA negotiations, contract management, partnering with Labor Relations, Legal, etc.
  • Union partnership
  • Shift Bid Process
  • 24/7/365 Schedule development with 12hr shifts
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills to make informed decisions quickly, especially in high-pressure situations
  • Adapt to changing circumstances and operational demands, particularly in a 24/7 environment
  • Remain calm and composed under pressure, highlighting resilience in the face of challenges

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$133,800 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Criminology, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Physical Sciences, or a related field plus 8 year of experience; or equivalent (MS + 4 years, AS + 12, or no degree + 16 years)
  • 5 years or more experience of active leading/managing a structured entity (e.g., DOE Protective Force, Paramilitary, Military, or Law Enforcement Agency, etc.)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Master's degree and five or more years' experience working with a DOE/Federal Agency program oversight personnel.
  • Experience in Safeguards & Security functional areas such as Protective Force, Physical/Technical Security, Personnel Security, Classification, Assurance, or Information Protection.
  • Ability to set a clear vision and strategic direction for the protective force, aligning it with organizational goals.
  • Proficient in conveying information clearly and persuasively to audiences, including leadership, stakeholders, staff, and union representatives.
  • Ability to listen to concerns and feedback from union members and staff, fostering an open and inclusive environment.
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with union leaders, staff, and other stakeholders to promote collaboration and trust.
  • Skilled in mediating disputes and resolving conflicts effectively, particularly in a unionized environment.
  • In-depth understanding of security operations, protocols, and best practices relevant to a protective force.
  • Experience in managing crises and emergencies with safety and secure events, ensuring the safety and security of personnel and property.
  • Knowledge of labor laws, collective bargaining processes, and union dynamics to navigate negotiations and maintain positive labor relations.
  • Interpersonal skills that demonstrate the ability to effectively negotiate and develop trust-based working relationships with multiple internal and external customers and partners.
  • Commitment to training, mentoring, and developing staff to enhance their skills and career progression.
  • High ethical standards and accountability in decision-making and actions, fostering a culture of trust and respect.
  • Commitment to equitable treatment of all employees, understanding the importance of diversity and inclusion.
  • Openness to new ideas and approaches to improve operations and enhance protective force service delivery.
  • Experience in managing budgets and resources effectively, ensuring financial sustainability while meeting operational needs.
  • Understanding and addressing the emotional needs of staff and union members, fostering a supportive work environment.
  • Familiarity with DOE/NNSA security requirements, relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards to ensure compliance and enhance safety protocols.
  • Skills in identifying and mitigating risks associated with security operations.
  • Demonstrated ability, desire, and implementation with engaging security operations during non-standard hours to assure process, procedures, and operations are operating as designed/planned.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage tasks and programs within a high ambiguity environment and to establish a continuous process improvement/learning environment.
  • Broad understanding of Sandia's national security mission work.
  • Active DOE/DOD security clearance.
  • Ability to obtain DOE SCI clearance.

About Our Team:

The Safeguards & Security (S&S) Program's purpose is to render exceptional service in the national interest. Our mission is to protect people, information, facilities, and material to accomplish the national security mission. S&S solves security challenges by listening to customer needs and then developing and implementing solutions. The S&S program continues to monitor and manage risks that could adversely affect the security of our operations and safety of our workforce. Those risks include:

  • An insider threat that may maliciously release critical and/or classified information;
  • An active assailant;
  • International travel/global threats;
  • Incidents of Security Concern (IOSCs).

    We strive to develop strategic partnerships and provide effective tools and resources to integrate security into every aspect of the work performed at Sandia. S&S continues to innovate and transform security to modernize the program for operational excellence; develop and sustain highly capable security professionals and strengthen relationships and collaborate to achieve our national security mission. S&S is responsible for leading efforts to develop, implement, and successfully execute a diverse portfolio of Defense Nuclear Security (DNS) Safeguards and Security Programs to mitigate risks and liabilities and facilitate execution of Sandia's national security mission. The DNS S&S Program also leads and supports DOE, NNSA, and the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) initiatives.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
