What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an R&D Manager, to lead the Defect Prevention/Reliability and Quality (5283) team and join the 5280 organization. The successful candidate will lead a team of 15 employees, be self-directed and customer focused have strong interpersonal, teaming, leadership, and analytical skills. The Defect Prevention / Reliability department in the Microsystems Engineering, Sciences and Applications (MESA) Complex uses a layered defect prevention strategy and Lean Six Sigma methodology to support the design, develop, qualification, and product acceptance of high reliability microelectronics and microsystems for nuclear weapons and other government applications. MESA produces silicon-based and compound semiconductor products. The span of MESA technology and products includes CMOS Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) and memory devices, Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) devices, Quantum Traps, Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (HBTs), High Voltage Diodes (HVDs), Focal Plan Arrays (FPAs) , and Photonics. The manager will partner across the center and the laboratory and with external customers and regulatory agencies enabling high-quality execution of MESA's product realization processes for design agency and production agency - to include post-fab processing (test, burn-in), to packaging, product acceptance and delivery.

The manager will lead a high performing team to deliver various MESA products which are designed to meet demanding performance, reliability specifications, and stringent survivability requirements in adverse environments.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Manage resources across the department.
  • Lead, coordinate and schedule product acceptance activities with Nuclear Deterrence (ND) office and Sandia Field Office (SFO) representatives.
  • Oversee MESA's Quality Management Systems (QMS) and ensure compliance with NNSA and Sandia standards.
  • Track, coordinate, and manage Center-level internal and external audits.
  • Mediate approaches to properly address any product findings prior to formal deliveries.
  • Lead and manage center Management Review Board (MRB).
  • Set strategies for the department that support the Center and Corporate Sandia.
  • Coordinate with peer departments within MESA, and peer centers across Sandia.
  • Participate and support Design and Product Governance Board (DGB/PGB) activities.
  • Establish center-wide policies and procedures.
  • Track team's certification and training requirements.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

Salary Range:

$149,700 - $254,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master's Degree in a relevant STEM field plus eight (8) years of relevant experience; or bachelor's degree in STEM plus twelve (12) years of relevant experience
  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • Understanding of statistical and probability methods and tools; Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA); and Root Cause Analysis
  • Experience designing and implementing defect prevention and/or quality management processes for product realization
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • STEM degree, preferably in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Physics/Materials Science
  • Experience with the successful development, qualification, and delivery of high reliability microelectronic products
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trust-based relationships among peers, staff, management, and customers
  • Experience realizing NW systems, component, or subsystems, including familiarity with realize product procedures (RPPs), NW Quality standards, and/or delivery of Mark Quality products
  • Understanding of microelectronics design, semiconductor processes and radiation effects on semiconductors
  • Detailed knowledge of NAP-401.1A, Sandia's realize product procedures (RPPs), Sandia's corporate policies, and ISO-9001
  • Certification as a Quality Engineer, Quality Auditor, Master Black Belt, and/or Black Belt

About Our Team:

We provide support for and advocacy of engineering best practices that achieve cost and time effective product realization for MESA's microelectronic and electronic products using a layered, defect prevention strategy and lean six sigma tools. The defect prevention strategy is used to detect and remove defects at every phase of product realization. The lean six sigma tools are used to remove complexity from existing processes a major source of defect generation as well as waste. During product design, development, and qualification we use a systematic framework to manage requirements and configuration documentation, ensure the team's project plan includes activities and deliverables needed for final product acceptance, verify and validate the robustness of the design, assembly and test processes to meet requirements and customer expectations, and optimize the transition of the design to production. During product manufacturing and production, we interface with process owners, supplier quality engineers, and product acceptance inspectors to provide verification and documented evidence that the product and critical manufacturing processes meet the design intent and to minimize the costs of nonconformance (scrap, rework, etc.)
