What Your Job Will Be Like:
Join our dynamic and positive team operating pulsed-power accelerator facilities that generate high intensity x-ray and gamma ray outputs used to study radiation effects and to qualify strategic weapons systems. These facilities include:
- The HERMES III Induction Voltage Adder, the world's most powerful electron beam accelerator, producing a 20 MeV, 800 kA, 40 ns single pulse beam that is primarily used to produce gamma-ray radiation environments.
- Saturn, the world's most power hot (100-500 keV) x-ray source, is a 10 MA, 1.5 MeV, 25ns single pulse accelerator.
The Accelerator and Electrical Sciences Group is seeking an R&D Science and Engineering Manager for the Above Ground Testing (AGT) Accelerator Operations Department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Manage the department budget, staffing and programs.
- Assure safe, compliant, and reliable operations of high hazard accelerators, with a mindset of continuous improvement and customer focus.
- Support a variety of testing and R&D customers from NNSA Defense Programs, Laboratory Directed Research Development, Department of Defense, and industrial partners.
- Work with Senior and Executive management to define and implement the long-term Strategy for the Department.
- Work with department staff to propose and conduct R&D activities to provide needed improvements to the facility capabilities, diagnostics, and instrumentation.
- Assure compliance with corporate and regulatory requirements, including DOE Order 420.2D for Accelerator Operations at HERMES III, to include safety basis documentation and operating procedures.
- Serve as the primary interface to corporate and NNSA oversight organizations.
- Manage external proposals and funding agreements for facility utilization.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

About Our Team:
The AGT Accelerator Operations Department (1332) has three applied physics research facilities for the study of high intensity x-ray and gamma-ray radiation effects science. The department is responsible for the maintenance, operation and continued development of the Saturn, HERMES III, and SPHINX pulsed power accelerators. Core missions support electronics response for military and satellite applications, nuclear and non-nuclear materials physics, high power electron and ion beam physics and pulsed power accelerator science. These radiation environments present very challenging research and development opportunities in areas such as: high current and high voltage generation, switching and breakdown; x-ray, Gamma-ray and fast optical diagnostics; large data acquisition, control and automation systems. With support from sister departments within the organization, Department 1332 also conducts pulsed power research and development to: improve radiation source fidelity, increase the output and fluence, as well as to improve the overall reliability and reproducibility of the accelerators. These unique, world class facilities are an essential part of the NNSA's Stockpile Stewardship Program and serve customers that are both internal and external to Sandia.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
