What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Engineering Support Technologist, Undergraduate Summer Intern

The Securing Top Academic Research Talent at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (START HBCU) Institute is designed to increase research collaborations with HBCUs, and to develop a diverse talent pipeline in STEM. We are interested in attracting candidates from partnering universities and growing collaboration opportunities between HBCUs and Sandia. A key part of this is through offering summer internships to both undergraduate and graduate students to work at Sandia National Laboratories. The START HBCU Institute will hire interns into several critical mission areas.

As an Engineering Support Technologist Intern at Sandia, you will be guided by a technical mentor and work closely with a team of other technologist and/or engineers on issues of national significance. You will perform a variety of entry-level duties in support of technical activities in such areas of instrumentation, mechanics, circuit-level electronics support, computer applications, testing, optics, and/or engineering data collection. You will work on a specific task basis to support technical activities within a science and engineering environment assisting in the development, implementation and monitoring of a variety of technical processes and programs, and analysis of technology options. Job assignments vary upon organization and discipline preference.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support application-specific test setups.
  • Support mechanical design and test teams with product realization.
  • Perform electronic troubleshooting using a variety of test, characterization, and data acquisition instruments.
  • Analyze results and implements procedures for problems in a number of disciplines.
  • Develop test specifications and procedures.
  • Create code, simulations, and test benches for FPGA electronics and embedded systems.

    Students will be expected to show a commitment to operate in and contribute to a safe operating environment.

Opportunities exist at both our Livermore, CA and Albuquerque, NM laboratories' site locations.

Students will be expected to work full time onsite for the duration of their internship.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited related undergraduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 for all degrees earned/in progress
  • Working knowledge and understanding of an engineering or science-related field as listed in the required section
  • An existing U.S. Government granted security clearance
  • Experience/familiarity in either technology area; embedded systems, integrated circuit design/FPGAs, computer architecture & networking, software/hardware integration, RF electronics, and/or digital signal processing
  • Experience with programming languages and platforms such C languages, Python, Java, MATLAB, Simulink, Verilog, and/or LabVIEW
  • Experience/familiarity operating electronic test and measurement equipment such as Spectrum Analyzers, RF Power Meters, Oscilloscopes, Voltmeter, Logic Analyzer
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical principles and processes
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute in a team environment

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
