What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a year-round R&D undergraduate intern to join our dynamic Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG). The selected candidate will work directly with national laboratory staff members on programs within the PSTG in thermal battery design and development which supports the SNL nuclear deterrent mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Support teams performing fundamental research into thermal battery chemistry and electrical/mechanical properties.
  • Support teams performing set based concurrent engineering via modeling.
  • Document procedures and results, complete data analysis, and present out work to the team.
  • Contribute to general laboratory housekeeping.

Salary Range:

At Sandia, we value the important work done by our interns and its contribution to National Security. Because of this, our interns earn competitive pay rates. Our pay structure is based on earned credit hours, classification, and degree level. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package. Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
  • Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to secure and maintatin a U.S. security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship

Note: If you have not earned a HS diploma or equivalent, please apply to a high school intern position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or environmental engineering
  • Hands-on experience in the lab or modeling and simulation
  • Basic understanding of experimental data analysis/statistical techniques
  • Highly self-motivated individual who can work independently and learn quickly
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

About Our Team:

The Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) provides comprehensive capabilities in power source research, design, engineering, characterization, evaluation, and testing. Supporting the PSTG is a staff of more than 80 scientists, engineers, and technicians with backgrounds in chemistry, electrochemistry, metallurgy, chemical engineering, materials science, engineering, and physics. The power sources Thermal Battery Design and Development group designs, develops and prototypes electrochemical power sources, including thermal batteries and associated battery assemblies for nuclear applications. Additionally, the team develops advanced manufacturing techniques for thermal battery production and provides engineering support for surveillance and shelf-life programs in support of the nuclear deterrence mission at Sandia National Labs.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
