What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05212, HI Sensor uSystems & FA, is seeking an early career R&D Electronics Engineer/ASIC Design Engineer to join our team that develops sophisticated heterogeneously integrated sensor microsystems. The selected candidate will be asked to help develop, architect, and design high complexity electronic microsystems (typically integrated circuits) that support Sandia's national security mission. These microsystems include focal-plane arrays as well as other multi-component microsystems enabled by heterogeneous integration.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design, evaluate, and test integrated circuits for sensor microsystems.
  • Translate customer requirements into high level system architectures.
  • Develop of a broad understanding of a variety of microsystems technologies (CMOS, MEMS, photonics, III-V semiconductors, etc.) and heterogeneous integration technologies to assist or drive development of highly optimized, heterogeneously integrated microsystems.
  • Contribute to research thrusts in novel signal/data processing circuit design techniques relevant to focal-plane arrays (e.g. neuromorphic circuit architectures, etc.) and radiation detectors.
  • Contribute to research thrusts in microsystem integration, particularly heterogeneous integration technologies required to realize focal-plane arrays and other high complexity microsystems.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's in a relevant STEM field plus four (4) or more years' experience or;
  • Master's degree in a relevant STEM field
  • Experience with integrated circuit design, simulation/verification, and layout, particularly in Cadence tools
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • PhD in electrical engineering or relevant STEM field
  • Familiarity with requirements and design of radiation-hardened circuits, low power systems, or deployed sensors
  • Experience with:
  • designing CMOS devices, embedded systems, FPGAs, or microcontrollers
  • microsystem integration schemes (e.g. bump bonding)
  • testing, diagnosing, and debugging integrated circuits
  • Familiarity with some of the following: VHDL or Verilog languages, Python or Perl, PCB electronics design and layout
  • Strong interpersonal skills which include teamwork, effective leadership, compromise, delegation, conflict resolution, and the ability to work in a diverse team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports, and documentation

About Our Team:

The Heterogeneously-Integrated Sensor Microsystems & Failure Analysis department specializes in designing and realizing high-performance focal-plane arrays and sensor microsystems for a variety of customers and developing and implementing integrated-circuit (IC) failure analysis techniques. We have broad and deep expertise in IC analog and digital design, semiconductor physics, and device fabrication and integration. We also have expertise in IC failure analysis techniques needed to support integrated-circuit development for both internal and external foundries.

We are an accredited Department of Defense (DoD) Trusted Design Center. Our Category 1A Trusted Accreditation through the DoD Defense MicroElectronics Activity (DMEA) is for "Trusted Design" services for both unclassified and classified integrated circuits. We provide Trusted ASIC Design Services for both radiation-hardened and non-radiation-hardened Trusted Foundries (350nm, 180nm, 130nm, 90nm, 65nm, 45nm, 32nm and 14nm). We are also involved in microelectronics research and development for next generation microelectronics in support of both laboratory directed research and development (LDRD) and external sponsors. In addition to IC product development, the department works closely with our in-house radiation hardened CMOS technology group to maintain state-of-the-art radiation-hardened CMOS research, design, and production capability.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
