What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are looking for a passionate and dedicated R&D Computer Scientist Lead to spearhead the Modeling and Simulation (ModSim) development for the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS) program. This critical initiative focuses on monitoring nuclear explosions in the atmosphere and space through cutting-edge space-based sensors and advanced ground processing techniques. Join us to develop creative solutions to unique national security challenges!
Why Join Us?
- Impactful Work : Your efforts will play a crucial role in enhancing national security, directly contributing to the safety and protection of our nation.
- Collaborative Environment : Collaborate with a diverse team of experts, including project managers, software developers, systems engineers, and nuclear physics specialists, all committed to advancing technology and innovation.
- Cutting-Edge Tools : Lead the development of state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools, such as the NUDET Detection System Modeling and Simulation (NDSMS) and the Integrated Simulation Program (ISP). These tools are vital for real-time system performance representation and high-fidelity ground system verification.
What You'll Do:
As the Technical Project Lead, you will play a pivotal role in the success of ModSim development. On any given day, you may be called upon to: - Provide daily tactical oversight and direction for ModSim development efforts, ensuring seamless coordination across multiple programs and projects.
- Offer technical guidance on architecture and implementation decisions for ModSim tool development, shaping the future of our capabilities.
- Ensure the technical integrity of ModSim products through rigorous peer reviews, engineering change control, and adherence to best practices.
- Lead and manage the technical change control process for ModSim tools, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Coordinate verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A) efforts with ModSim systems engineers and external customer organizations, ensuring our tools meet the highest standards.
- Deliver regular project reports to internal management teams and external customers, showcasing the progress and impact of your work.
- Collaborate with project management and execution teams to develop execution plans that align with fiscal year goals (scope, schedule, and budget).
- Craft long-term strategic plans (5 years and beyond) for USNDS ModSim development, positioning our team for future success.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

- Master's degree in a computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or other relevant STEM field plus 1 years' relevant experience or equivalent (BS+5 or PhD)
- Experience defining and executing software development projects.
- Experience with development of modeling and simulation applications.
- Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent
Qualifications We Desire:
- Proficiency with varied communication methods, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience.
- Familiarity with remote sensing and application of modeling for remote sensing applications.
- Familiarity with USNDS.
- Experience with software development processes, requirements derivation, and product verification/validation for software tools.
- Experience with Gitlab, Java, and C+
- Active SCI clearance.
About Our Team:
We provide research and development (R&D), systems engineering, system analysis, system test, and project management for the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System to DoD and DOE sponsors as well as supporting speculative and next generation systems. Using systems engineering expertise to support USNDS space and ground systems throughout the lifecycle, the team uses advanced modeling and simulation capabilities to assess USNDS performance as a system-of-systems to inform mission partner decisions. We work closely with ground and flight systems (SNL and LANL) to ensure that USNDS needs are met and manage R&D efforts for the operational users at the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC).
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
