What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Engineering Program/Project Lead to run the Enterprise Datacenter Hardware at Sandia National Labs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Collaborate with customers to define and negotiate system requirements that align with mission objectives, ensuring clarity and mutual understanding.
  • Develop and present conceptual designs for engineered systems that meet defined requirements, while identifying necessary subsystems, components, and interfaces.
  • Plan and oversee project execution, coordinating with internal and external teams to ensure alignment and adherence to project timelines and objectives.
  • Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, budgets, and schedules, and communicate these effectively to stakeholders.
  • Utilize advanced project management techniques to create detailed work breakdown structures, resource-loaded schedules, and assign tasks to team members.
  • Analyze project performance using Earned Value Management System techniques, making informed decisions based on variance calculations.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to project teams, leveraging your engineering expertise to address challenges and drive project success.
  • Lead project teams through the planning, tracking, and execution phases, ensuring that all activities align with the project management plan.
  • Manage changes in project scope through established change management processes, proactively identifying potential issues and developing contingency plans.
  • Conduct risk assessments, develop mitigation strategies, and recommend actions to manage project risks effectively.
  • Engage in negotiations with customers regarding requirements and limitations, ensuring that all parties are aligned on project expectations.
  • Prepare and deliver comprehensive progress reports, proposals, and presentations to stakeholders, highlighting project status and performance metrics.
  • Facilitate technical and program reviews to assess project progress and address any concerns related to cost, schedule, and performance.
  • Conduct postmortem analyses of completed projects, capturing lessons learned to inform future initiatives and improve processes.
  • Advocate for the addition, expansion, or discontinuance of projects based on performance evaluations and strategic alignment with organizational goals.
  • Equipment Receipt and Handling, accept and log all deliveries, handling and movement of equipment.
  • Using our DCIM Tool for Adds, Moves, decommissions to include:
  • Life cycle management
  • Asset Tracking
  • Installing the equipment after consulting with the customer base on classification of equipment
  • Connecting the requested network connections and power
  • Working with Data Center Core Networking to provision ports
  • Troubleshooting Servers, Switches, Routers at hardware level and above to work with customer and core networking group.
  • Media Management: Manage both unclass/class media within the data centers, media destruction and reapplication base on classification.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$109,300 - $217,400

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering or a related field plus 5 years of experience, or Master's degree in a related field and 1 year of experience
  • Experience leading or managing programs, projects, services, and/or teams
  • Experience leading teams in data center operations (DCO) with a focus on hardware
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent is required to start

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Knowledge and background in one or more scientific or engineering disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, systems engineering, physical security engineering, or chemical engineering.
  • Knowledge of project management practices for technical work, including developing project plans, work breakdown structures, and work packages; managing to scope, schedule, budget, and technical baselines; and documenting baseline reports and change control actions.
  • Ability to make decisions requiring scientific, engineering, and programmatic judgment.
  • Knowledge of the technical or operational discipline of datacenter hardware, networking, compute, etc.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to successfully plan, organize, lead, and monitor team efforts to completion.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.

About Our Team:

Department 9774 is responsible for managing the daily activities of critical IT services. This includes working in collaboration with the SNL Facilities team in several 24×7 data center environments to ensure all critical systems are operational supporting the mission of the IT infrastructure for Sandia National Laboratories on both the unclassified and classified levels.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance.
