The individual in this role will lead and mentor a team of engineers who support our Ubuntu Linux client endpoints and configuration management tools. The team is also responsible for architecture and solution design, roadmaps, daily operations, policy management, and tier 2 and 3 escalations. The Engineering Manager will drive client technology advancements, architecture, and engineering efforts, while leading with integrity, transparency, and humility. The Engineering Manager is also responsible for managing team dynamics, personnel development and coaching, building an environment of trust, and ensuring the quality and reliability of solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor the Ubuntu Linux Engineering team to deliver a world-class experience for Salesforce employees, contractors, and outsourced partners
  • Foster collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning
  • Develop and execute roadmaps, strategy, architecture, and solution design within the Client Linux space
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Software Development, Security, Networking, other Client Engineering teams, and more, to integrate solutions into the broader ecosystem
  • Actively work to automate where possible
  • Leverage agile work management practices, including story and sprint planning to track deliverables
  • Identify requirements for capacity planning, system optimization, scaling, and performance, focusing with the team on ensuring high availability for IT systems
  • Communicate effectively with leadership, peers, stakeholders on end users initiatives, progress, and challenges
  • Partner with stakeholders, product owners, and scrum masters to ensure work prioritization and resource allocation
  • Cultivate strong client relationships, understanding how they utilize their systems, their needs, and roadblocks
  • Work with Linux SMEs to maintain good relationships and training with Tier 1 support staff
  • Facilitate professional development of team members through clear goals, regular constructive feedback, training opportunities, and career advancement guidance

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership in managing high-level technical initiatives that align with the company's security protocols and business objectives.
  • Prior experience leading a team of senior Linux engineers
  • Proven experience managing an enterprise Linux environment
  • Experience in technical delivery of large scale infrastructure projects with multiple dependencies across teams
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences of varying knowledge levels
  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments where the only constant is change
  • Excellent interpersonal and skills with a passion for people development and a track record for developing talent
  • Keen attention to detail and strong critical thinking ability
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with direct reports, peers, partners, and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Puppet, PuppetDB, and Linux configuration management
  • Expertise in version control systems, particularly GitHub, and experience in managing complex codebases
  • Experience building relationships with multiple hardware vendors
  • Experience with client endpoint virtualization and containerization
  • Experience in budget management and resource allocation to support project initiatives
  • Experience managing systems distributed across the globe, used both in-office and remotely
