Location: US Remote

The Heroku Eventing, Metering, and Usage team oversees usage and licensing information on the Heroku platform, handles billing processes, and assists billing support in resolving customer concerns. Our systems primarily employ Elixir and Ruby. We're in the process of modernizing our internal legacy systems, emphasizing emotional intelligence, collaboration, engineering excellence, and effective communication. We're looking for someone who is intrigued by complex distributed systems, their inner workings, optimization possibilities, and methods to ensure their functionality. As a key member of the Heroku Eventing, Metering, and Usage team, you will collaborate closely with Heroku billing support to resolve customer issues, requiring effective communication skills and a proactive attitude.

This role offers global flexibility-you can work from a Salesforce office or remotely. Principal Engineer position requires advanced technical skills, outstanding analytical and influencing skills, and extraordinary business insight. It is a multi-functional role that requires building alignment and communication with several engineering and business operational organisations. You will be require to be operationally excellent while delivering innovative features on complex distributed systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a distributed team that operates across various time zones
  • Development of services and automation to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Day-to-day operations and maintenance of our existing complex distributed internal services
  • Extend the capabilities and features of our services to support emerging use cases
  • Supporting your colleagues in other teams to understand their needs and difficulties and provide a high level of customer service
  • Participation in the on-call rotation with your team to keep services operational and highly available

Required Skills

  • 10+ years in a full-time, professional software engineering role
  • Experience working within billing or financial systems
  • High proficiency in developing production software in Ruby
  • High proficiency in maintaining and enhancing RESTful APIs
  • Experience maintaining and enhancing GraphQL APIs
  • High proficiency in maintaining and enhancing complex, fault-tolerant, and event-driven distributed systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and lead multiple inputs, stakeholders, and tasks
  • Enthusiasm for guiding and learning
  • Drive long-term design strategies that span multiple sophisticated projects, deliver technical reports and performance presentations.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Heroku
  • Experience using AWS and familiarity with its services and offerings
  • Experience with containerization technology, e.g. Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience developing production software in Elixir / Erlang / Sinatra / Rails
  • Experience with agile or agile-like development processes
  • Experience problem-solving and debugging in intricate systems
  • Emphasis on emotional intelligence and teamwork
  • Emphasis on engineering excellence and best practices

For New York-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $204,400 to $323,400.

For Colorado-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $185,800 to $269,500.

For Washington-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $185,800 to $296,400.

For Washington D.C based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $204,400 to $296,400.

For Maryland based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $204,400 to $296,400.

For California-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $204,400 to $323,400.

For Hawaii-based roles, the base salary hiring range for this position is $185,800 to $269,500.

Compensation offered will be determined by factors such as location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Certain roles may be eligible for incentive compensation, equity, benefits.
