Job Summary

CertainTeed is looking for a Senior Engineer to join our Solutions Development team. In this role, you will help develop and launch new products and processes to improve the sustainability, performance, and appeal of residential and commercial buildings.

This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team of experts in building physics, engineering, materials science, industrial design, and architecture that focuses on early-stage development of new system-based solutions for the building industry. This is accomplished through product and process research and development, specializing in new markets, advanced materials, and new construction techniques.

Our research and development team focuses on a variety of new horizon initiatives, including new interior and exterior finishes, digital tools, and building systems, all with a common agenda to make buildings easier to install, more durable, and more energy efficient.

One major focus area for the team is offsite manufacturing, and this role would assist with the technical development and rollout of the CertainTeed "One Precision Assemblies" built-to-spec floor, wall, and roof panels (link).

The position is based in Saint-Gobain Research North America in Northborough, Massachusetts. Some travel, including international, would be required to job sites, partners, factories, and to other Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed locations.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the design and building of both small- and large-scale prototypes of new building products, systems, and processes to show to both internal and external customers for feedback to iterate on solutions. Knowing that innovation is an iterative process, you will need to stay open-minded about what the right product is, seeking to learn as much from what does not work as from what does.
  • Proposing innovative technologies and R&D focus areas for the building industry.
  • Developing and documenting product designs, construction details, and installation processes.
  • Reviewing and preparing calculations, drawing sets, 3D BIM (Building Information Modeling) models, and shop drawings to support the needs of a growing Offsite Solutions business.
  • Interfacing with consulting engineers, builders, and manufacturing partners for the design and production of panelized walls, roofs, and floor cassettes.
  • Supporting product management in identifying new opportunities and developing solutions to meet customer needs.
  • Documenting work through preparing and reviewing reports, presentations, and patent filings.
  • Mentoring both technical and non-technical members on building practices and code requirements.

Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of residential building construction practices.
  • Curious, open-minded, creative problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach to product development.
  • Knowledge of prototyping at multiple scales, including being comfortable working safely with power tools.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building practices and certifications like Energy Star, Zero Energy Ready Home Program, or Passive House (Phius).
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and ability to adjust style and content to the audience.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) + 12 years' experience Master of Science or Engineering (MS or MEng) + 7 years of experience, or Ph.D. + 3 years of experience in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building and Construction Technology, Building Science, or related fields
  • Experience working in construction, architecture, engineering, or design-build office
  • Knowledge of residential building construction practices, including hands-on experience
  • Experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, etc.) and/or 3D BIM software packages (Revit, Cadwork, Vertex BD, etc.).
  • Structural engineering experience is preferred but not required
  • Experience in prefabricated housing and the manufacturing of building components and systems (3D Modular or 2D Panelized) strongly desired
  • Knowledge of building science concepts (IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality), IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), hygrothermal transfer, waterproofing, durability) is a plus.
  • Experience applying building industry standards (including ASTM, NFPA, ICC) is a plus.
  • Ability to travel 25%
